I have a dog, while I like cats, dogs are just better for me, and are pretty much the only reason I get any exercise at all.

A previous neighbour had an Afghan who had a tendency to wander off. So he fitted a gate on the path. The dog was big enough to walk over it without problems but it was just a gate - no fence either side, he could have walked round it at any time.
He told me the dog was too thick to think of either - and he was right, Rufus just couldn't get out unless somebody opened the gate. 
Cats? I'm pretty sure they have invented teleporters ...

I had a similar experience with one of my dogs, not even trying to open an unlocked gate. Cats are way smarter.

Cats in general, and some dogs.
I'd like to have a nice cat robot that behaves like a real cat; pretty much ignores me except when time for feeding/charging.

Cats, but, not by a large margin. Have one cat now. Had a border collie while I was growing up, but, neither my wife nor I can be home during the day, so a puppy is right out.

I've been owned by cats in the past but I'm looking forward to getting a dog when I retire, possibly with added cat or cats for additional stress.

prefer cats, way less work,
getting to be a nuisance then chuck em outside (close the door/window they climb in through)
always give cats a way to go outside (it's unnatural not to do so) - bonus: they walk themselves

Currently, 2 cats and 2 dogs (beagles)
The dogs greet me at the door every night when I come home from work. The cats, well they could care less.
The female cat, has no vertical. She basically sleeps and eats, no problems there. However, the male cat, climbs as high as he can get, and one of his favorite pass times is to take everything that is on top of my desk; pens, pencils, letters, paperclips, keyboard, mouse and throw it on the floor. Another hobby of his is to chew through phone charging chords. Can't tell you how many of those I have replaced. 
Given the choice between the two, definitely count me in as a dog person.

Cats (and their owners) - definitely the preferred lot.
Unlike dogs, cats don't get brought down the street pissing on everything that's vertical.
Cats won't hump you leg, either, or stick their snout up a woman's dress to sniff . . .

I've had both dogs and cats and I prefer dogs. No reason at all, I just have more feeling with them. I understand them easily and they understand me easily.

Always had dogs. At one time, I had a pig, but we got divorced and she lives in Oklahoma now, and is actively preventing refreshes of satellite images of most of the eastern half of the state...

I had a dog (Collie) when I was a kid. Have had cats since I was 20. Currently have 2 cats.

I have a dog. A lab. I've had cats.
Cats are low maintenance as they don't need to go running all the time but cats have to have that cat box and the litter strewn everywhere. They'll bite you and take your spot on the sofa.
My dog will occupy my sofa spot but all I have to say is MOVE and point here to a new spot and she does gladly. A cat will heckin bite you for daring to want to move them.
And they can go everywhere and destroy everything.

We have 2 cats, a dog and 2 children. Prefer the cats and kids as they are more independent now so when we go away for weekends they just need feeding and the rest they can sort out for themselves. Dogs are people creatures and a lot more dependent

2 cats (total of 5 lifetime)
2 dogs (total of 3 lifetime, actually if you get right down to it I've only had 2 dogs. My current dog has a dog which makes 3. We got my dog a dog so he wouldn't be so anxious. Hasn't quite worked out that way but he is some better.)
Only one out of all of them I prefer would be the very first cat. Sampson took on a dog that was going after my wife and infant daughter when the wife went to the mailbox one day. He was a Maine Coon and live a very long time.

I've had dogs, because of the distaff side, but I don't like them.
If you mistreat a cat, it'll draw blood, then bugger off and live somewhere else (and, if you're lucky, they won't leave a "screw you!" farewell gift on your bed) -- you have to earn their loyalty.
Mistreat a dog, and it'll keep coming back for more; so they're great toys for psychos, and good for people who don't know how to treat animals, but I don't want pets like that. They have to stay because they want to, not because they're too stupid to leave.
Oh, and rats. We had two pet ones. They are fantastic pets!

I have owned both cats and dogs sometimes at the same time. I do not currently have either. Both have their good and bad points; I don't have a preference.
