In the German language "you" (Sie) is capitalised, I (ich) is not, just noticing.

That's what I mean. Although I have seen in correspondence "du" also capitalized as "Du" as in.
"Wie geht's Dir"
BTW English doesn't even have a "respectful you"...

Actually, maybe the question should be why the others aren't capitalized.
They're in place of proper name which are always capitalized. It actually is done (in religious literature) if one is referring to deity - at least one that the write believes in.
Using 'i' simply leads us to think you spend all our time texting and tweeting . . . nothing to worry about.

I just realised that if i start using lowercase "L" or "1" then l (or 1) can save a lot of pressing the shift key!

I just had a thought. If we started using "i" instead of "I" then that is like a little body with a head on it. Then Zaphod Beeblebrox could use "ï".

It came from a printers convention: when Caxton started off his presses, 'i' was tiny, and easy to miss, so it was capitalized (as the first letter of the first word of a sentence was by then) to make it easier to see.
And printers are a fusty mob: they don't like change, so when they get an idea, it's very hard to get them to let go ...

It used to be "i" but Apple trademarked lower case i so now we have to write I.
