On-prem SharePoint servers, maybe, but it seems to be a pretty big part of Office 365. It's "just there", so it makes sense I guess for people to just start using it as a document repository, if nothing else.

There are a couple of levels of recovering stuff that has been deleted. We have several people who keep quotes up there. They work jointly on some of them. Being somewhat paranoid, I wrote a console program that downloads anything changed or created to the file server every night.
That said, I don't think they have ever lost anything. How many document levels (history) do you keep?
Sharepoint is an excellent idea that was/is poorly implemented although it has improved.

Being a system that is designed for non-tech-savvy people to use and maintain, SharePoint is absolutely superb. Seriously.
Unfortunately, it falls at the hurdle of being maintained by people who are not only not tech savvy, but also completely imbecilic.
