I'm looking for a good level hardware site (mostly not the kind you find in a modern computer) to help me with an idea I have (searching the web left me with way to much options)...
Any suggestions?

Hewlett Packard (Compaq) - they're still flogging gutless hardware that's behind the times
microsoft too but with them you have to get in real fast before they mothball it

Not at all. You can look for some commercial resellers like PC refurbisher which are giving warranties.
You get, what you pay for.

i usually order from Fry's or when i can't find what i need there i go to newegg.

u have an idea ........ u mean like Charles Babbage once had an idea ... check with the universities they may help ...or even a hardware manufacturer like intel...or AMD...

( Hardware means so many things ) It sounds like you are asking about chips and connectors... Here, DigiKey and Mouser are the best organized ( good filter / search engine ) - least expensive. RS may be the better bet elsewhere.
Several board houses will make prototype boards reasonably. ( Note, I've only done small stupid boards and their free layout software wasn't very painful. _For small boards. )
Of course, if you want "metal and bone" I suggest McMaster Carr and the slaughterhouse.

I mean, I'd say we are a bit like locusts when we descend on a city and gentrify it.
But any group with disposable income will do that. Developers aren't unique to that. If anything what's unique about us is the *companies* that spring into existence and create economic bubbles around them.
It's not really the developers, but due to the dynamics of say, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft, we expand and descend in swarms along with them.
If anything it's the tech companies, not the workers that cause the problems NYT is complaining about.

Hi All,
I have next week off to catch up with all those jobs I can't find the time (or reason to do!), I have two robot vacuum cleaners to fix, a P-Bass that needs a new nut, a Robot I am building that needs some coding doing for it... Sleep, watching random stuff I have downloaded / recorded catching up on reading (I am on a bit of a William Gibson kick at the moment)
