Pardon me for taking exception to this, but that's BS. I've written DI's and you go for the most specific instantiator you can with the information you have in the service manager. You don't go from general to specific, or simply barf in the bowels of your injector with no intelligible message.

Unless I misunderstood your original post you had two constructors with a single param, so how does the DI know which is "more specific"?

Yes, it's called the single responsibility principal. By separating the two if you want to use your own resolver, you can.

Why can't my bike float me to the ground like a parachute? The more things a tool does, the worse it tends to be at them. EF can use SPs and raw SQL, but you're not going to have as much flexibility or control, so if you want to do anything advanced you're probably going to have a bad time.

Well, one is of the form Foo<Bar> and the other is just Foo. That seems sufficient to distinguish which to use.

Agreed, but in my case, I want to do something very specific and simple involving several table joins and I don't want to write the class models for each table so EF can make the query. For me, it's a case of the tool which as a method that looks like it should work but has severe limitations. Tools (we're talking software tools, not specious analogies) should not be designed so they get in the way when I want to take control, and shouldn't require me to write additional otherwise useless layers of code.

What if it has both Foo and Foo<Bar> registered as services? How does it know which one you want? You should have added Foo to the param list of the existing constructor rather than create a new constructor with one param also. That's just how DI works.

So given what you said, I tried something:
public CatalogContext(DbContextOptions opts2, DbContextOptions<CatalogContext> options) : base(opts2 ?? options)
That actually worked. Sort of gross though 
Actually, the whole issue could be avoided if I'd done:
var dbBuilder = new DbContextOptionsBuilder<CatalogContext>();
instead of:
var dbBuilder = new DbContextOptionsBuilder();

Although I suppose you could go far enough into the future to look up your own obituary, then go back to that date...
But my question is...what would you be trying to learn by attending your own funeral...? I think the risk is that, were it possible, it could fundamentally change what you think of some people, even closest friends and relatives...would you risk it?
