It is spread by coughing, so no, it is not worthless. The mask is not there to protect you, but others. It provides a little protection for the one who wears it, as does washing your hands - but that is NOT the same as being worthless.

Even when going to surgery, there's this rigourous cleaning of everything entering the operating-room. It is not 100% effective. Doesn't mean that people should suddenly stop that and start doing surgery in a pig-pen.
