I see they are already using my time travel application.
It was broke, so I fixed it.

As with a resume (CV), using past tense eliminates having to change tense later. Reducing maintenance is all up-side.

Well, my Trackball if I'm being accurate.
The replacement microswitch arrived (cost: £2.25 + 0.99p P&P for two switches) and twenty minutes later (most of which was waiting for Windows to reboot so I could test it) and the left mouse button is working again.
No more releasing half way through a drag, or highlight. No more double click bouncing! No more pressing the damn thing until your finger bleeds to make it work!
Ahhhhh....I feel I have accomplished something today...

Probably just the amount of cr@p I have loaded, plus the auto-backup to NAS on power-on. Not normally a problem, it gets turned on in the morning and I go get coffee and so forth. Then it's on until I shut down for the day.

In this throwaway age why didn't you buy a new mouse? I can appreciate that your mouse may be a well-worn friend, worthy of repair?

Because the exact model is superseded, and I don't like the new one. It's only available in two variants - like mine (with thumb operated ball) but wireless which I don't want as the cat will remove it for me; and with a finger operated ball which I find uncomfortable to use for long periods as it means moving left and right with your finger instead of thumb.
Plus, it's a lot more environmentally friendly to repair than replace. (And twenty minutes of my time is a lot less than £45!)
I have an emergency-backup "Normal" rodent or twelve, but I hate using those!

I had a track ball that I loved but it died a sad death. The lesson being mices fly worse than pigs.

I had a trackball at work but it died. Can only get a wireless but did not want to make them spend the money. Got one for home though.
I too like the thumb ball mouse and would rather use a standard mouse then a finger ball mouse.

It's remarkably difficult to "use" cats fro anything practical, including pest control.
Dij came in half an hour ago so proud of himself with what looked like half the lawn in his mouth. On closer inspection, it was half the lawn, but with a teenie, tiny, very dead mouse in the middle. So now he appears to be trying to package his kills for shipment - perhaps to you? Are you in the market for a dead mouse? I can offer a good price on a job lot...

Okay, what spec should I look for for a dev ready laptop? I won't need over 15" screen as I have an external I'll use as well, but I'm after help on processor [i5?] and memory [4GB]. I am undecided between going down Win8 or finally switching to Ubuntu [Ubuntu, they use it in the Jungle!].
HDD capacity isn't a big thing, I've got 2TB, and growing, external. But a DVD player would be useful or should I move to an external.
The budgie right now is ~£400 but I'd like to know what I should get [probably costs more] and then look at what I can get.
Mercans can only suggest if they'll ship it here. For free. As in beer.

i5's are fine, but 4GB RAM seems a little tight to me

I agree. An i5 is perfectly fine for development. In most situations, an i7 is overkill.
4GB of RAM seems kinda low. I would try to get 8GB (6GB would work fine, but it's rare).

I like my i7. When you have nothing to do, you can open the task-manager and watch all 8 virtual threads. That's good entertainment.
