It's not just that - though that's the main part for me - if you don't, and they die...
In the UK that's a minimum of "leaving the scene of an accident" and possibly "manslaughter" or "causing death by dangerous driving", and I'm sure most countries have similar legislation (In France I think they have a "Good Samaritan" law which could cover it since the walker could need medical help and you drove away). Either way, if they die then the police start assuming "hit and run" and go looking for you until proven otherwise!

The French Good Samaritan law was obviously what caused the driver of the car in Nice (a normally pleasant city in the south of France) to stop for a moment after he hit me (I rolled over the bonnet, up the windscreen onto the roof and then slid off sideways to the ground) to make sure I sat up before he zoomed off down the narrow street. The various onlookers, stopped, looked for a moment and then moved on - except for a young chap who came over to help me up and see if I was OK (he was an English tourist). It turns out, luckily, that Peugeot 309s don't hurt you very much when they hit you.

Its called the herd effect. You clearly can see someone who is too lazy to use the underpass who is about 50 meters away from him and risk his life trying to cross 4 lane busy as hell road. And he is never alone. Once the subject is seen trying to pass few other subject join him to raise the coffin sales.
And they say humans are above animals. I have seen dogs pass roads safer than humans

Ohh yes - I've come across this many times before.
My particular beef are cyclists who wear black jeans, black jumper and a black hat (not a helmet) with no lights.
It's as if they want to die.

Agreed - I tend to find it's those, dare I say it, 'Nazi' cyclists who use two of the fit inducing flashy lights just to piss of motorists.

You want to try cycling mate, I wear reflective jackets and lights, but my bugbear is cars failing to dip their headlights for cyclists - I'm typically blinded for a couple of minutes while my eyes readjust.

Not just cyclists - some of them don't bother dipping their headlights for anyone. And they usually have their fog-lights on as well.

This annoys me as well, but to be fair, you don't see a cyclist in the dark (even one with a decent headlight) more than maybe 50-100m away, at which point not dipping has already dazzled them.
I do dip when I see a cyclist but I know (as I cycle as well) that it's probably too late to avoid 90% of the annoyance already.

Last night I almost totalled a Mod on a scooter[^] - his bike was covered in lights, but none of them were switched on. If it wasn't for the fairly faint glow of some LEDs he had fitted under the chassi, I would not have seen him.

With that many lights, I suspect if they actually turn them on the scooter won't start.
