I for myself keep my kids safe whenever such event pops-up. These kind of visits are always at the evening an me kids are have to be in bed at 19:00 so they can't come, so I can't come...  . Not that a dislike these occasions - I loathe them...

It's a shame it's not their first baby. You know that somewhere around 3 days a baby has it's first real big clean the bowels out poo. For first time parents this is a must see moment. Not the baby but the parents. They just don't know how to react with the total sensory overload of that first greeny-black, treacle thick, swamp stinking slime poo.
I think it's the contest between the eyes and nose over who gets to shut down first to protect the brain.

I'm with you. I had a colleague who left the company a little while ago. We were good friends and got along perfectly. But on his going away party he told me that even though he had loved working with me, he was very disappointed that I had shown no interest in the two children he had gotten while working at the company.
Excuse me, but I don't get it. So it's a big deal for him, why does it have to be for the rest of the world? What is so special? He has only done what precisely ANYBODY in the whole world can do and does every so often...
Another thing that pisses me off: I have to (indirectly through the taxes) pay for his paternity leave (and that of every other person, male of female who get children). I have deliberately chosen NOT to have any, why should I pay for everybody else? Let the people who choose to have children pay for them as well. That would be fair in my opinion.
Plus: For the next 18 years, he is allowed to stay away from work whenever he feels like it to "care for his children". Some parents may be ok with this, but I know some who deliberately abuse it (I have another colleague who's gone almost every other day, and NO children are that sick!). I of course have to work harder because they don't carry their workload... 
Rant over, anybody with children can flame me and vote abuse now, but I feel entitled to my opinion even though I know that not everybody shares it...

Well, his children will indirectly through the taxes pay to a certain extent for your sick care and pension.

funny how fast such opinions change if (against all plans) you get your own baby...
I have the opinion (now ) that all those useless singles have to pay us parents for producing their pension and social system payers (Seems you don't know how expensive children are). 
At least where I live (Austria) we often hear that we have too less children, and our system will brake because at some point nearly everyone will be over 60 here. So I "decided" to be the stupid one to pay for "growing" new citizens, what you pay on taxes is nothing compared to that

I doubt that! Mankind is overpopulating and crowding the entire planet. At some time the eco system will break down because there are TOO MANY people and they pollute everything around them... The rate with which mankind grows is not sustainable by the planet in the long run (maybe not even in the short run).

2 kids, 4 grand kids and I still consider anyone elses kids little horrors. It also helps that I live in a different country to my children and see them only a couple of times a year so I think they are wonderful.

I can't disagree with anything you wrote.
There's currently over 7 billion people on Earth. They've all been babies at one point or another; some still are. It's been estimated that throughout our history, there's been over 100 billion people that lived and died. Again, that means 100 billion babies. Sounds more like an infestation than something even remotely "special".
I'm gonna stop right here before I start channeling George Carlin.
