Seriously cool stuff.
As we've had actually quite ridiculous weather lately, with several hours of thunderstorm this evening, I've been sitting watching the realtime data from lightningmaps and noticed sadly that a majority of the strikes isn't getting registered. And that's despite having an active station just a bit to the south of here

I suppose it depends on how the users have built their systems. Types of antenna used, locations etc. Also, some of the strikes are maybe cloud to cloud and therefore in the wrong phase with the antenna (again depending on antenna type).
It does also say in the literature that if the strikes are too close to a station they aren't detected.
Looking at the live data, things are pretty quiet over Europe today/tonight. Last week, the place was just bouncing with strikes, most of central europe was just covered in colour on the live maps.
Hopefully the fine weather forecast for the next couple of days will stir something up!

Amazing and cool!
What blows me away is how far away lightning can be detected. I've seen detectors go off in Alaska for lightning strikes in Louisiana. How is that possible? Is the EM pulse that strong that it can be detected 4 or 5 thousand miles away? And what is the EM pulse measured in? Farads? uWatts? I'm totally clueless on this stuff.
[edit] - Never mind, I re-read your article and realized the answer was right there!
Another question I have is, what is the clock source for triangulation? Is my assumption that it is the master clock on the GPS satellites? I guess these things have pretty high resolution, but also that more detectors results in better triangulation.

Hi Marc,
Yes the system does use the GPS system as the master clock. You can see a time stamp on the trend and in the raw data snapshot and they go down to nanoseconds.

I have been fortunate enough to get a new laptop (Toshiba Satellite S55t-B) Quadcore i7-4710HQ 2.5Ghz, 8Gb ram, running Windows 8.1
Wasn't sure about Win8 but I don't mind it at all.  Finding it very similar to win7, but with some additional nice features -- like the TaskManager which is much nicer with more granular control.
I thought I was supposed to hate windows 8?
So I've replaced my hatred for Win8 with hatred for Eclipse Android Studio and especially the Android Emulator. Oh, how I loathe you, AVD!!!  
I started it about 30 minutes ago and it is still at the Android splash screen.
Come on!
It was the main reason I bought the computer so I could do some android dev.
I guess there is always something in the tech world to loathe.

You might want to try GenyMOtion[^] as an emulator, much faster and a hell of a lot better.

I believe I am going to go this genymotion route now. It's just getting ridiculous.
I just want to do some android dev on the road -- out at coffee shops without carrying my android (nexus 7) in every time.

Your welcome, I got so frustrated with the emulator provided and I use AMD not Intel so the only solution was to go to GenyMotion.

You'll really like the popup menu when you press windows logo + x (also right click in the lower right corner will bring it up).

Yes some things are different but so what. Just learn how to use the new interface and you can do everything you have done before.
I even like some active tiles on my start screen. The others I reduce to small size.

I'm in that boat as well. My everyday machine is a Surface Pro (first gen), so it's not like I can go back to 7 if I wanted to. It's hooked up to a USB dock and I use it essentially like a desktop (hooked up to multiple monitors and my mouse and keyboard).
I don't use Metro apps. I've got all the shortcuts I use regularly pinned to the taskbar, just like previous versions. I hardly used the Start menu because of that, so I hardly ever see the Start screen either. Now I'm kinda wishing the older OSes had the same right-click menu on the Start button. And if I really need to search for some app, typing on the Start screen isn't really any different than typing in the previous Start menu.
I think people hate it for the sake of hating change.

I agree. The thing I noticed is that you can right click the "start" thingy like you could before and get to the functionality that I normally want and I can also use WindowsKey-R which runs whatever I want. No problem. All is okay and maybe better under win8.

But I also just got some right-side popups telling me something for apps like farmville or something I don't know anything about or why it's telling me anything about them. Maybe they were preinstalled or something??

Definitely sounds like something the manufacturer installed.
It will take you some time getting all that crap uninstalled on a new system.
One thing I did find annoying about Win8 was the charms bar popping out every time my mouse was near the right edge of the screen. That is easily disabled: http://www.askvg.com/how-to-disable-hot-corners-charms-bar-and-app-switch-list-in-windows-8-1/[^]
Good to look at both methods to get familiar with the new interface as well as the old way of doing things.
Another setting I like to set is "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the Desktop instead of Start"

One other thing I found useful, which I forgot to mention, is to place your desktop tile in the upper left hand position on your start page (first tile) and then you can press enter to go to the desktop.

Something wrong then. My Dell is half the power you have and the emulator starts and gets to the home screen in 2 or 3 minutes at most. Yes, it's not the fastest tool in the world, but it is very useful for Android development. If you want faster response then plug your Android device in and use that.

You are right. There is definitely something wrong.
Here's the deal. Brand new computer with Win8. I ran the emulator first time and it started up nicely.
So I had to be greedy. I knew about the Haxm Intel thing which was supposed to speed up emulation and now i can't get emulator to start. I'm working through numerous steps now to get it back. ugh!

I think the hatred is maybe those who used the original 8.0 or whatever. This new one goes to the desktop and stays there and works well for me.

I think people hate it because it is different. I had Win 8 form the day it was released and now my computer is running Win 8.1 and the only problems I had were due to drivers, which wasn't really a fault in windows but my hardware - My headphones drivers have overwritten my graphics card drivers and I got BSOD after 15 seconds of getting into windows. Even though I am not really sure why Nvidia needs sound drivers. But with the recovery and safe mode it was an easy fix, just had to uninstall both and install them in reverse order, so Nvidia had it's files and now it works just fine.

What's everyone using to encrypt thumbdrives now-a-days as Truecrypt has its issues?
Should I just purchase a Kingston DTVP30 or something?
I have a blank 8GB but can't find any freeware to encrypt it with. Kingston website doesn't have a tool to encrypt a thumbdrive for what I could see.
I have a Windows 7 Pro on my main computer and it doesn't have bitlocker (I do have a technet subscription though).
