There was supposed to be someone filming it, but there were technical difficulties. This clip is actually a backup I had my wife take (from the seating) just in case. The original clip was ringside.... would have been nice to have it instead, but *shrug*

Yeah, this was the St. Louis fight. Amateur fighters seem to have a problem with showing up. Not sure why. A lot of the times when they show up, they don't make weight. We had one of the guys that was wanting to fight 170 show up at 185 (the next weight class up), and still want to fight one of the 170 guys.
I think it's just that the nerves get to them. It's different for pros because they get a purse for showing up, they get to train for their job, and a few other things. Also, in the amateur league, there's not much consequence for ditching a fight.

You should have seen the waitresses out there. Shady Jacks, as it turns out, is a fully legit biker club/bar. It's even got a harley shop attached to it. There were tons of Hells Angels there, and lots of other clubs. All the ladies working in the area were dressed for the occassion ;D

You may have remembered a while back I posted a link to the Blitzortung community real-time lightning detection and monitoring network.
Well I decided to join the community and install a station, so far my furthest detection has been just under 3600 km.
So, that's what Project-X was in my rant on Friday was about, trying to get up on the roof!
I did a write up with pictures of the controller and antenna builds/installs for anyone who is interested.

Maybe a few more CPians can join the collective and get the detection accuracy and coverage up!

Seriously cool stuff.
As we've had actually quite ridiculous weather lately, with several hours of thunderstorm this evening, I've been sitting watching the realtime data from lightningmaps and noticed sadly that a majority of the strikes isn't getting registered. And that's despite having an active station just a bit to the south of here

I suppose it depends on how the users have built their systems. Types of antenna used, locations etc. Also, some of the strikes are maybe cloud to cloud and therefore in the wrong phase with the antenna (again depending on antenna type).
It does also say in the literature that if the strikes are too close to a station they aren't detected.
Looking at the live data, things are pretty quiet over Europe today/tonight. Last week, the place was just bouncing with strikes, most of central europe was just covered in colour on the live maps.
Hopefully the fine weather forecast for the next couple of days will stir something up!

Amazing and cool!
What blows me away is how far away lightning can be detected. I've seen detectors go off in Alaska for lightning strikes in Louisiana. How is that possible? Is the EM pulse that strong that it can be detected 4 or 5 thousand miles away? And what is the EM pulse measured in? Farads? uWatts? I'm totally clueless on this stuff.
[edit] - Never mind, I re-read your article and realized the answer was right there!
Another question I have is, what is the clock source for triangulation? Is my assumption that it is the master clock on the GPS satellites? I guess these things have pretty high resolution, but also that more detectors results in better triangulation.

Hi Marc,
Yes the system does use the GPS system as the master clock. You can see a time stamp on the trend and in the raw data snapshot and they go down to nanoseconds.
