The trouble is that TG was Clarkson - the only reason to watch Original TG was for his bits, the rest was truly dull. So when he left, the show went south as well (Top Gear math in use here, you understand). When he brought it back, it worked - and how!
Now, I suspect the Beeb will control it a lot more - to prevent Evans et al doing a repeat - and the Corporation regrettably has no sense of humour. As a result, I think it's going to be either "don't forget your toothbrush on wheels" or a "proper" car show. And neither of those is going to pull in the punters like TG(2) did. So it's budget will get cut, it'll get duller, lose even more ratings, get more budget cuts, ... and finally die ...
While I suspect that the Amazon Prime version will be one of the most popular illegal downloads very quickly after release!

I think the new show is likely to fail. I can see what they're doing....getting away from the goofy antics and trying to get it back to more serious proper driving, with proper drivers, proper petrolheads. They think they're adding credibility to the mix, but what they're actually doing is extracting the fun. The thing Top Gear got right was that it appealed to more than just petrolheads, it was a general entertainment show that just happened to use cars. With that element taken out you're going to reduce your target audience.

It's not about them being petrol heads, it's about them being funny. Clarkson was funny. Dry, sardonic and very, very smart. Rude as hell, but funny and a little too close (or too over) the edge sometimes. That's what gave it the spice.
It won't work as well. I'm sure it'll be fine, but not the level it was.
