Yesterday, by mid-afternoon (local time) it was 65F (18-19 C). Lovely weather.
Today . . . we're working on 12" +/- 4 (30cm +/- 10) snow.
Am I getting a bit too political if I say this isn't even remotely normal?

Cycles like that in the 90s made some of my best snowday memories (because the combination generally fueled heavy snowfall), along with one of my worst when after 3x 12-16" snowfalls in two weeks it went to ~60 for about a week and destroyed the massive snow fort I'd built to bluff the older boys across the street: Broad U shaped about 3x5' interior, 4-5' high, walls that were 4' thick at the base tapering to 3' at the top; but without a single throwable snowball behind the wall.  
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?

Sounds like the makings of a fortified igloo.
I was in Chicago for the "Winter of '79" - alas, old enough to need to go places and not play in the snow. So much, they found some still unmelted in a quarry where it was dumped - in August.
Such weather is absolutely unprecedented (in my scores of years) - not that the weather can swing over a period of a week or so - but in less than 24 hours, from record heat to below-normal temps. Oddly, the moisture's coming from the west; the ocean is to my east. That's the thing; there's more and more "rare" weather events.

Do you remember the Trib (or Sun-Times?) had an iron-on for the occasion?

Not only did I use it, but I still have the t-shirt (worn so thing it's almost transparent)!
Not being a kid, I had some really unpleasant memories about commuting on the EL from Rogers Park to Evanston, spending several hours for the few stops - and standing on the platform, above ground, in freezing howling wind, waiting for the transfer. Those heater's didn't do much.

Don't recall the iron ons, the only ones I had at the time were KISS ones (hey I was in my early teens). But I do remember the political fallout for Bilandic (I had to sneak politics in somehow  ). Ah `79, back when winters were winters (as an avid ice fisherman, I am lamenting the lack of ice around here currently).

These days, one can find and read pretty much anything about anything. The era of alternate facts and all that.
We live in an era, weather and otherwise, wherein the term "Alternate Facts" can actually be used with a straight face. We need no other reason in order to remind us just how f*cked things are and will be getting.

So what is one to do? We all know that using short term, local data to predict long term, global trends is not going to work. I cannot collect and analyze all the data from every source on all topics so I'm stuck with "trust". Who I "trust" and what level that "trust" entails varies but in the end you have to "trust" or you become a very dysfunctional person.

Nothing wrong in that paragraph - only the acceptable paradigm seems to have been warped.
Better said, warped overtly. There have always been lies, misrepresentations, &etc. (like Disraeli's Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics of a century ago).
Further more, people tend to believe the facts that jive with their perception of reality (or hoped-for reality).
The paradigm shift, now, is that everyone can have a voice loud enough for everyone to hear. In a way, the information age really isn't! There's so much information and so much misinformation that they pretty much cancel out.
I try, as does everyone, to apply my areas of stronger knowledge where possible. Amongst these are chemical kinetics and a looked-for baseline so that a "fact" can be viewed with a frame of reference. So - we are, for example, putting "old carbon" back into the atmosphere.
What really surprises me is that anyone would expect nothing to change. One should not trivialize or politicize a fact and try to anticipate consequences and react to them without being influenced by some of the largest financial interests on the planet. That's why I say "Something's going to happen - the only argument is what".

I remember reading that, on a geological scale, things have been more stable planet-wide over the last 10,000 years than "normal", and it's only recently that things have started swinging back into what "should" be happening.

Weather shouldn't be political. I know it is, but it shouldn't. It should be factual science, regardless of your political affiliation.
Anyhow, I am going to get 5-12" of snow by tonight (upstate new york), and I blame it solely on Willy Wonka's little friends.

All web page are very slow today.
Just started Task Manager: very high network usage, by svchost! (i.e. I have no clue what does it).
It doesn't seem to be windows update.
For the record I have Windows 10 fully updated to the latest version and haven't installed anything in months.
Now network usage is a little bit better, it's looks like a chain saw (repeated teeth) every seconds (up to max network usage).
(Sysinternal) Process Explorer is not very helpful to diagnose...
Any clue how to diagnose what could be wrong?!
[EDIT] Reboot seems to have fixed it. Might have been a Windows bug after all...

It's a tool that allows services to run from DLL files instead of EXE.
It does sometimes get confused when a service fails and goes ballistic in it's usage - CPU, Memory and / or network.
Generally, just "turn it off and back on again" fixes the problem!

The trick is to find out which process started that svchost process.
A candidate might be Defender when updating the signatures. Or you are pushing Windows updates (update P2P file sharing has not been disabled).
