When an app remembers I've opened:
C:\a\b\c\d\blah.txt
...and the next time I try to open blah.txt and it's no longer there, instead of defaulting the File | Open dialog box to something completely unrelated such as My Documents, why not walk back up the original path? And if the parent doesn't exist, continue until you've reached the root level. Then if the drive itself is no longer there, then it's probably ok to go to My Documents.
In other words, if I'm trying to access some convoluted, deeply nested folder, and it's no longer valid, please leave me somewhere within that hierarchy - at the closest valid parent. It's easy enough to reach My Documents from anywhere. Not so with where I'm actually more likely to look.
As developers, we should all do this. And because we should all do this, then this should actually be the standard behavior for the dialog box.

Tell that to the developers for Microsoft Office. When I save an attachment from an e-mail, they pick folders at random: My Documents, C:\, C:\Windows, the desktop, etc. The only consistency is it's never the last folder I chose to save an attachment to.

It is Windows which means you can always write code to make it do what you want.

I do it. Over and over and over again. I'm saying most app developers don't go through the hassle of doing it. And more often than not, that's exactly what would be the most time-saving approach in most situations.
