That's ... annoying! I want a *relaxing* game (so no FPS's for starters) and have seen Euro Truck Simulator 2 recommended for such, and it looks like it might be what I want, but it's Steam powered... (and dirt cheap.)

I just hate Steam: it wants to update every time you want a quick play...
But are you sure that putting games on a work PC sends the right message about what you are doing while "working at home" anyway?

The only person I'm sending a message to is myself! Oh well, maybe I'll try the other PC hooked up the TV - bigger screen, but not so readily available when I'm meant to be working!

You got that right - he leaves me to do ALL the work, from tea-boy to coding to management, while he just sits there playing games and posting sh*t on some web forum. I'd give him a smack if it wouldn't hurt so much

My kid uses it. A lot. Mostly it's a disk hog.
Try Goat Simulator.
We also play some "party game" things which are fun -- each player users a mobile device as a controller.

If the PC is a work PC given to you by your "work" then, I would not install game stuff on it.
Even if it is your own work PC, I would not install game stuff on it (or any other non related stuff).
Get your own game PC.

Bought and paid for by myself - yes, I know the sensible thing to do is keep work and play separate. But sometimes I just want a quick break without necessarily taking myself right out of "work mode".
The advantage of working from home and being ones own boss is that you can do these things!

Steam is not a game engine. It is a portal for playing games. You buy your games via Steam and Steam hosts them. If updates are made to the games that you have or to Steam itself, Steam will update them for you. Thus, the wonderful update annoyances that Griff was commenting on.
I do not condone installing or playing games on a "work" PC, but hey, that is your call.
If you have a decent PC, then Steam should not be too bad a resource hog for you.
I use Steam all the time, with no issues to mention.

Installing Steam gives you access to their substantial library of games from all genres. It allows you to buy games for your Steam account or gift games to other Steam account holders. Once you own the game, you can install it on any PC that has Steam installed (any number of times). Many games will sync their files across systems. This allows you to play a game on a laptop during lunch at a cafe and then later continue your game on your home PC. This feature can also come in handy when your hard disk dies so you don't loose all your progress in your favorite time-waster.
On installing it on a work computer, that would a question I would run by whoever you report to.
