I don't really see any great irony there.
As much as many people are trying to equate it with Microsoft's (admittedly sometimes heavy handed) approach to pushing updates, I don't really see a parallel between a company trying to keep their OS secure and up-to-date and the "YOUR COMPUTER IS UNPROTECTED BUY OUR PREMIUM VERSION NOW!" brigade. MS aren't the ones demanding money every time you boot up your machine.
In reality, they're actually keeping their prices down by doing so (imagine what it would cost to support every old version of Windows) which is a rather different thing altogether.
MS are by no means perfect but I think it's a bit unfair to give them flak for protecting their users from borderline malware.
But, hey, if it's more in the spirit of the internet, then let's go with "Yarbles to M$, incompetent muppets, evil empire, evil people, everything they do is rubbish especially Windows 10 - I can't really tell you why I think it's rubbish but it must be because it isn't open-source/hasn't got a nice shiny apple on it/someone cool said that it isn't cool (delete as appropriate)."

I agree. I've managed to build a career around what Microsoft has provided for free. Other than a licence for the OS when I buy a new computer, all the updates are free, as is the Visual Studio versions I use. (Actually, I think I did by a Pro licence for VS2008 years back, but basically the free versions are quite adequate for most single-developer jobs.) Possibly corporate licence holders are prompted to buy upgrades (how would I know ) but personally I have no argument with Microsoft. Quite the contrary - I owe them a debt of gratitude.

I agree. I've managed to build a stable and a wheat field around what His Grace has provided for free. Other than modest taxes for the cattle, all the services are free, as are the plow and the tools I use. (Actually, I think I did by a Pro licence years back, but basically the free versions are quite adequate for most single-peasant jobs.) Possibly the nobles are prompted to buy upgrades (how would I know Smile | :) ) but personally I have no argument with the King. Quite the contrary - I owe him a debt of gratitude.

If I need someone to tell me what to do, I will go see one of those ladies who prefer leather. But that has not happened yet. Nor am I masochist enough to give them my money and then be told to shut up and let them do whatever they want whenever they want.
Want to get rid of malware? That's easy. Get rid of Microsoft. Depending on what you use instead, you are rid of far more than 90% of all potential problems. The bad guys lurk where they hope to catch the most dumb sheep, which obviously is with Microsoft. Stay clear of them and you will not need their 'protection' in the first place.

Well, sure, there's security in obscurity.
If I release my new OS tomorrow, it won't have half of Russia hacking into it because they'll never have heard of it. In that sense, I'll have produced one of the most secure products in the world. The problem is that when this becomes a selling point, my OS loses that protection and people will soon realise that was the only security feature of any worth that it ever had.

I do use Linux more and more, but not especially for security reasons. A little common sense and caution have protected me quite well so far.

In all fairness, they have protected me pretty well too - and that's using MS products!
Blaming Microsoft because they are popular enough that spammers, virus and other malware writers, and such like target them is missing the point: there are viruses and malware for Android, iOS, linux. And you can expect that to get worse as they grow in "target worthiness".
Me? I blame MS for adding "features" instead of fixing bugs, removing "good stuff" and replacing it with cr@p; all because it fits the "market vision" instead of being what the users actually wanted ...

Thank you. I may be a bit conservative, but I always liked to build and expand my libraries. At some point I had more work with rewriting or replacing stuff that I had based on something on their ever growing red list than with the task at hand.
Give me a good C++ compiler on Linux and I can merrily go on forever without having to live with Microsoft's idiocy or hopping through ever more hoops whenever they feel like it.

You know other food companies have done the same for years now. Consider breakfast cerials, like cherios or honey puffs (it's actually caramelised sugar, not honey). They promote their products as "very low in fat" and having pretty much all of the vitamins you need for a day and call it healthy, just keeping quiet on the fact one serving loaded with 10x the sugar you would need for a week.
White bread, is healthy coz it's low fat and has 10% of the RDA of something.
"Skim/low fat milk is healthy" they say, not mentioning there is only a whopping 2 grams of fat in a whole glass of ordinary milk as well as way more vitamins/pro-biotics than skim (which they then fortify with unabsorbable replacements) - that's a whole 1/8 gram of fat in your tea/coffee (for the weird that drink it white).
All advertising is bullshit: does changing your brand of washing powder give you a more enjoyable life? Does drinking a different brand of juice make you a better surfer? Does a particular brand of toothpaste help you make more beautiful friends [that seem to always wear tiny bikinis/bathers] (of course not using will help lose friends but that's beside the point)...
