I think what's difficult about the open source model that if a company wants to contribute to a open source project in money or labor, that company also helping its competitors, and this is very conflicting. For projects that have many users that conflict diminishes, but for projects with a relatively small amount of users and with just 1 or 2 people running the project it becomes a bigger concern.

Fight is a relative term; Intel had an annual gross profit of $39B as of March 2018. This is almost three times the market cap of AMD (who had profits of ~$2B in the same time frame.)
Yes, Intel needs to clean up some of it's operations and get a better focus on some things (especially 10nm fabs), and AMD has lit a fire under their collective butts, however they aren't in the dire straights which the article insinuates.
