Button click on Web Dialog opens its copy in new window

Hi,

I am opening Generate Report Web page as Model dialog. That dialog having two textbox for selecting the dates for which we have to generate reports. after selecting the dates and clicking on generate button system checks whether there is any record between these dates. If record exist between these dates then it opens the word file showing all the records otherwise it opens the another window of same GenerateReport.aspx page showing the message there are no records between these date.

I want that if there are no records exist between these dates then it must show that message on the same page rather than opening the new window. I have not written any code for opening the new window on Generate button still it is opening the new pop up window. I have use the <base target="_self"> in the head tag. when i do this then it shows the
Message on same window if Records not exist but then it doesnt show me the dialog box for open and save the word document when record exist. it only saves the document.
