Most of the time, in a (secure) network, one would not make its drive visible to other nodes... If the drives are not shared, how one could know they exists?

What do you mean ? A network with no CD drives ? With no hard drives ? There's no easy way, you'd have to trawl the whole network, looking for the sort of drive you don't want to find.
