Connecting an Android application and SQL 2008 R2 server

Hi Sir,

I am trying to build an Android application to send an sms by reading the values in a SQL DB. Please suggest if there is another way to do it other than Web services. Even connecting the DB sirectly to application is fine with me because I am not going to share the app with any one. Its just to solve My problem of sending sms to various mobile phone.
