There could be any reason behind this
1) Server name which you have entered may be not reachable. Try to ping the server name
2) See if remote connectivity to the sql server instance is enable or not
3) If it is working one your team mets system then get the exact server name from server properties and try to connect from your machine using the same name. May be you are using SQLSERVER2008_DEV where actual server name is SQLSERVER2008_DEV\DB1

So the chances are it's one of two things:
1) The server you want is not available on the network accessible to you. It may be switched off.
2) The login details you provided didn't work.

Start again. Open SSMS and use the ServerName drop down and the Browse feature to try and "find" the server instance. Then use the correct authentication details.
