Having a touchscreen I consider a typical phone UI should be used to avoid fat-finger-follies.

I went with /specially designed/. I would be looking for a consistent UX across all platforms irrespective of the UI.

This on got me curious...
Whoever invented this poll joined Laptop and iPad on the same answer.
Even if you're comparing iPad with a 10inch laptop their UI approach is usually very different.

Yeah i agree,
a laptop is 90% not going to be touch screen, that one ability changes a whole host of options that you would use.

Having very limited interest in the whole miniature mobile environment I have no idea.
Does a phone/slab tell the app what size the screen is or do you have to get it from the user settings or some such?

Android lets you define different UI layouts (in the same app) targeted at small, medium and large screen sizes. Android 3.2 allows you to be more specific. As I understand it, the OS (Android) picks the appropriate UI based on the device's footprint.

Windows Mobile will test you the screen res of the device but it's totally up to use how you use that information.

I think I may have been hasty in replying. I believe an Android app can also select (i.e. load) any of its layout resources.

A well designed (that part being key) UI that is created for a smaller screen will still work on a larger screen. It may look clunky, but it will still be usable. That same can't always be said the other way around. That's why I would start by using the "smartphone" UI.
I would of course create a UI dedicated to the 5-7" form factor if a lot of customers asked for it, or if my sales in that size were out of proportion to my sales in the smaller size.

5" is only slightly larger than higher end android fondleslabs. 7" is closer in area to the standard 10" tablet form factor than it is to even the largest of phones.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?
