I've been management. I've seen those that have moved up in the ranks through management (including VP), and I've seen how much they wish they could be developing software again. I know I'm good at this and my greatest satisfaction comes from solving a problem (either new or a bug).
We each should do what we love, and I get great satisfaction from this.

Exactly my experience as well.

The pinnacle has to be to come up with the next great software idea that you can sell for tens or hundreds of millions before it falls from favour and all value drops away.
Then you can spend the rest of your life doing whatever you want to, indulging your own crazy coding ideas if you really want to, or frittering it all away on hookers and high quality drugs.

Just like Charlie Sheen?

Well he's not going to last forever, and someone needs to keep the hookers and drug dealers in business.
As my boss said at the office Christmas part "These whores aren't going to f*** themselves".*

Someone has to step up eh?

I ran my own company for a few years - the software I developed for it won several industry awards but I quickly came to realise I didn't have any real interest in running a company so we sold it to our main customer and I work for them now.

|
|
|

And it isn't going to be a software company!!!
|
|
|
|
|
And what would it be?

I want to be CEO of a spaceship company.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, waging all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

Now there's an idea that is out of this world.
Good luck.

Something which we all think about but rarely talk about, and judging by the response it's a fairly well-spread poll so far as opposed to the usual 70-80% preference for the obvious answer...
I too dabbled in pacifism once.

Well, most jobs are quite boring and you get paid more when you get promoted. For us it's the other way round. The job is fascinating and you get more than your boss if you're any good.

we all have a future prospectus i just determined myself to a better programmer everyday then i was yesterday... to learn n grow

How about becoming CEO and get behind developers asses and tell them what to do because you're the kind of CEO that knows how to both CEO'ing and top dog developing!?
They see me CEO'ing, they hatin'...
It's an OO world.
public class Naerling : Lazy<Person>{
public void DoWork(){ throw new NotImplementedException(); }
}

Because after a year's managing you forget how to program and just make a fool of yourself...

True...
I actually play the role of CEO properly you won't have time to follow no developer ass to teach him how to do anything...
After a year, technology will just by-pass you and have to admit that you know much more MS Word and Powerpoint key shortcuts that on any other application

CTO is nice but it's too disconnected from the field and too much political for me.
Being an top notch architect is for what I'm working everyday.
I like to be on top of technology, design and implement solutions.
As years go by, we start designing more and implementing less but still we need to know a lot about everything.
Cheers!

That's exactly my thoughts about the subject.

I believe in this rule...
It may not be always right, or may not always be this "aggressive" but it certainly have its roots on reality.
It's like the other saying: Those who cannot do, teach.
Like I said, it's not always true but I think we all have at least a couple of examples from our school times.
Cheers!
