I almost selected Mainframe/server, but decided that I write very little on them now so I'd just stick with PC/Laptop.
But while I'm at it, I might as well ask for clarification. If I'm sitting at a PC, running a Terminus Emulator, TELNETed into a Mini-computer, editting/compiling/linking code on the host; does that count as PC or what?
Is the question really about where the editor and compiler reside and run? Or about which system I'm more directly connected?

I guess it would be the biggest device in your chain of terminals.
I use a big xeon cad workstation, so I choose server.

I did have a C# compiler on my Android Tablet (you entered the code, it squirted it to the web server which compiled and ran it) and it was a PITA. Autocorrect and Auto Capitalise made it frustrating, and it was just so damn slow to "type" code in!
if (a == 6) { b = 2 + i; } Took 37 "taps" due to the need to keep tapping "change keyboard mode" to get the non-alpha characters.
I don't do that any more...

Silly you!
When you use the expression 'try a tablet' and coding, the obvious meaning of table is something more akin to Vicodin or Oxycontin.

The heavier ones are nasty - Morphine for example destroys my short term memory for a couple of weeks after I've had it and that's like you've suddenly developed Alzheimer's!

I'm writing C++ code for VeriFone POS terminals.

Yes - but that wasn't the question!
It's asking on what device are you writing the code, not what device are you targetting?
So unless you are writing the code on the the POS terminal...

The IDE does not really fit here - the other choices describe specific hardware - well, a web-based ide can run on almost all of them... why is a software in this list?

Well it is a completely different architecture than writing on a traditional system, regardless of the hardware platform. It makes sense to have a "side view" to understand how many developers actually use web based IDEs.

Code on smart devices/tabs is really a tedious thing, I have tried once but one can not concentrate due to small screen size, less user friendly manner
I think most of the developer will go with PC or Laptop
