I always wondered why people were willing to pay so much for WoW when there are good alternatives like Guild Wars for which you don't need to pay contribution every month.

There are also better things to do than watching movies, playing guitar, eating humongous amounts of chocolate, talking to people, riding a bike, programming, posting this when I should be working, etc... but we do all those things; some more often than others, but we do them all... and also: videogames, they be fun

Don't get to play as much as I used to, but that is alright. Blizzard is starting to get desperate, after making some bad strategic business moves, I think, and it shows in the latest game release.
Anyhow, I play a 110 warlock, and it brings out my inner super geek in ways that other outlets do not.

What have they done poorly? I haven't played WoW in two years or so.

I said business, but it is more like game design, which affects business in the long run.

For one, they (Blizzard) have taken away flying in most expansions starting with Draenor, but allow you to get it with a series of achievements. This takes a lot of grinding out to accomplish. I know for a fact that this upset a lot of long time wow fans, who have quit just because of this.
Some of the expansions have not been that great in story line. For instance, we will be stuck with dark, demonish stuff for a while because that is the premise of Legion (mostly), and frankly it is very depressing.
I will say that they have started to give players a better chance to get really high level gear without doing raids/pvp events, if they choose so. Which is nice, because not everyone has the ability/time to game all night on some mythic level raid, etc.

Which makes all the mythic level raid players quit

Q.E.D.
Swords of Glass was pretty cool, too. No instruction. Not sure what was required to win. That was great fun - had a partner to play, too.

I used to play WOW in my school days. Then switched to DOTA2 (it was based on WOW) during my college days. Now DOTA is also dying.

No MAAAAN. Dota is not dying.

I hope not. DOTA 2 is arguably one of the best games ever made, far better than LOL. Still, LOL has a bigger community, partly because the patches are more frequent to keep people interested. But Valve has been paying lesser attention to the development of new features and heroes for the game. Also, significant patches are almost 9 months apart. That does not go well with the community.
If you have noticed the matchmaking queues are longer(in 5K mmr category at least), with people playing with the same people in multiple games.
It is dying, but I hope it survives.

..but it sounds similar to our weekly team meetings
Now is it bad enough that you let somebody else kick your butts without you trying to do it to each other? Now if we're all talking about the same man, and I think we are... it appears he's got a rather growing collection of our bikes.

Except fo brief periods of time, and when I had I didn't have the money. Now I have both but I don't have the time nor the will - I prefer D&D with my friends or real shooting at the range.

You get three months off to finish your master thesis.
I played three months of non-stop WoW.
That was exactly the reason why I never wanted to play WoW... I can't game in moderation.
I quit WoW, found a job in IT and finished my thesis the following year.
That was about eight years ago.
Good old times

The first one of my fellow students to become "Great Adventure Grandmaster" used to comment that being a university sophomore was the three best years of his life (with a clear reference to the only serious game available around 1980: The teletype-style user interface of the Adventure game).
His nearest competior in becoming the first Grandmaster was a physics student who had become so fascinated by computers (much due to the fascination for Adventure) that he wanted to switch his major from physics to computer science. He was denied the switch: Although he had top grades in all his computer courses, his intense fascination for the Adventure game and computers in general had taken all his time, so all his other courses he barely got a passing grade. So his average grade was not good enough to be admitted to the comp.sci study. (No need telling: He has been working in the software business ever since he completed his studies, never as the physics graduate he really is.)
