I loathe working on a laptop keyboard, couldn't imagine trying to work on a touch screen.
Common sense is admitting there is cause and effect and that you can exert some control over what you understand.

I have done it before on both a full size as well as mini iPad.
when I did it though I was VPN'd into a machine and was still using all the tools available on it and the iPad was just acting as a display. in a pinch it was nice to be able to do it for minor changes that had to be made quickly but I wouldn't want it as my dedicated development environment.
I have some friends however who swear by it and are very productive using it daily.

For tiny amounts of work, it isn't terrible although still somewhere between bad and awful.
I was developing an application that would be used by seniors on a large tablet, about the size of a standard letter piece of paper. Ended up with one of the devices for testing and they installed a copy of VS on it for me. In the middle of usability testing and found a small bug, popped into VS, fixed it and then deployed.
Until they have better haptic feedback and no lag in the response time, it is not the technology for me. Couldn't use it without watching the keyboard section for the visual queue a key had been touched and then the screen to make sure it actually appeared. Felt like I had forgotten how to type and resulted in a lot of hunt and peck.

yes, but it was a pain in the ars.
actually i did it on a 5" phone (android).it was a small app writen in java and there was no need for other apps except the coding app to be open. now think about a real program. there are Vs, ssms, notepad++, ... , and there are tabs, solution explorer window ,... . what about alt+tab or ctrl+shift+tab . when was the last time i programmed on my 15" laptop? i think most of the problem is about small screen size then lack of physical KB.

A paper mill I worked at had an application for scaling in/out trucks. The screens were upgraded to touch screens, the users used a pencil eraser to touch the appropriate areas on the screen.
And for coding, I've never done coding for a mobile type device... always mainframe/desktop/services.

That was a level of hell deep enough that I frequently went back to my real computer made the fixes there and then sneakernetted the corrected file over.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

... discomfort. If there is a Hell for programmers I guess it would be one of the punishemnts - especially since it was VisualBasic 6, with its useless and clueless autocompletion.

Or the index fingers. I work on resistive big touchscreens (resistive is a must since they have to be used with thick rubber gloves and no, they can't change to fancy touch gloves) and they need a freaking punch to be activated. After a while I felt like Ryoga (form the manga Ranma in case you don't know) when he was learning the Breaking Point technique.

Here you normally don't really need a Keyboard - OK ... sometimes (but not very often) you need to enter values. For that a Touchkeyboard on the Screen is good enough.

On Android / phone it's possible but frustrating - one of the first things I put on my first tablet was an online C# app, and it worked really well. But ... everything got autocorrected which was a nightmare with variable names, it decided the casing in spite of what I wanted, ... I deleted it and never tried again.
On the WookieTab in Win10 mode it works very well - VS runs on it, albeit a little slowly - but it's not possible to touch-type which slows me down horribly: no tactile feedback means you don;t know where your fingers are, and you can't move your fingers to the "rest" position because that types "ASDFHJKL" into your application every time. It's also damn awkward with the latest version of the soft keyboard because the SHIFT, CTRL, and ALT keys don't "stay down" when you hold them, so you have to "press and release, press and release, press and release ..." so selection of a long passage becomes a real PITA.
A full size, real keyboard works so much better!

Once upon a time I could cross the road while writing a message without ever looking at my phone, having a long message typed before reaching the other side and with only a minor T9 error in the text. Now to write a simple sentence I have to stop somewhere safe, try to see the screen if there isn't too much light, curse the touchscreen/keyboard/autocorrector to Hell and back and write something that resembles Vogon poetry in half an hour.

Not sure about CTRL and ALT, but if you double tap SHIFT it stays down but nothing indicates that state. Also seems to do it when you hold SHIFT down for 3-5 seconds and then release. At least on the most recent version of Win10 I can get.
OT: I'm sure I saw a story about why it is called the WookieTab, but I can't find it. So... why is it called the WookieTab? Unless it is quite hairy and rips people's arms off when they try to do something it doesn't agree with.

Just tried it, and double tap turns shift on and back off again...
That's on 1709 (OS Build 16299.248)

I'm running 1709 (OS BUILD 16299.248) as well, and after a bit of investigating, taking screenshots, etc. to explain what's going on with mine I discovered that it is a setting in the keyboard options!
So bring up the virtual keyboard, tap the settings gear, then the settings gear in the popup. Near the bottom under the touch keyboard section is "Use all uppercase letters when I double-tap Shift".
First Image I found[^]

I've got it turned on as well!
Even if that worked, what was wrong with the old version where you held shift / CTRL / ALT and it stayed on until you let go, just like a "real" keyboard?
You try using the soft keyboard to highlight half a dozen words in a row ...
