Because it is such a rich and extendable control with infinite uses. Obviously people never tire of it. Ah.... I remember back when I was doing MFC applications.... Oh, the fun I had with CListCtrl....

Even though I didn't go this year, I do want to go soon. GDC is by far the best one for my industry.

It's amazing how many "None" can be said.
1. None
2. None of the above
3. None of them
4. None, waste of time
5. None; my employer doesn't pay for them for software engineers
6. Not a bloody one!

then I'd go to TechEd Europe... sadly, I've can't afford it. I enjoyed my trip to TechEd 2000 but since then I've been working for myself and not had a company to fund my trip.

These confs usually charge a rather high fee - but let's assume that someone is prepared to pay that. But then if you have to add travel-fare from the other side of the planet and back, then it becomes just about impossible financially
If I ever do relocate to the US again, and I am not working for Microsoft, I'd probably try and join a company that would want me to attend these conferences.
More than the info you get from the sessions, there is also the big opportunity to meet up with peers and have some very interesting discussions.

I didn't think sanity had a voice. I thought sanity was just something that all insane people thought was reachable.

I didn't think insane people were aspiring to sanity. The one truly mentally ill person I have known certainly thought she was the most level headed person on the planet.
As for the voice of sanity: Did you know that it is okay to talk to yourself? And did you also know that it is okay to ask yourself questions? And that it is okay to answer yourself? But, if you ever ask yourself a question and you every reply "huh?!" that's when you're in trouble.

Pooh Bear once said, "You never can tell with bees". Same with insane people.

Yes, I do talk to myself. I ask myself questions. I answer myself. I am friends with myself. I debate myself. The really scarry thing is that I never stopped to ask myself if it was ok to ask yourself. Even if I had stopped to ask... I would have responded, "Huh?!"

A collegue of mine stumpt me with this when he asked if it was okay to answer yourself if you'd just asked yourself a rhetorical question.

There will probably never be a conference within 200 miles of where I am... they tend to take place only in the super-huge cities, or in Las Vegas. The closest I could hope for would be Atlanta (6-hour drive), and even that is rare. They're almost always on the west coast or in New York.
So the only way I'd even consider going is if my company paid for it, and it was considered work-time. If I have to pay for travel, conference fees, etc. myself, as well as use up my vacation, then no thank you.

All of these events trade a little knowledge, usually quite shallow, for the opportunity to make a marketing pitch to a captive audience. I'd consider attending if they paid me to, or even if it was just free of charge, but I'd never ask an employer to spend a dime on a sales presentation.
Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Hey we don't go for knowledge purposes, just see it a free jolly, the last one I went to was in '97 (Visual C++ Dev) , Anahiem LA - 4* Marriot, and on the following day (Sunday) we arrived (before the conferece of course :cough we went to 6 Flags Magic Mountain. Oh and the conference was OK, the last time we ever sqaw B. ekiM (Mike Blascazck)

Like school, they seem to be set up to go at the pace of the slowest learner, which only gets worse when all the code presentations are in VB. I have consistently been disappointed with any conference, user group, etc... I've ever attended. I can get more insights by walking on the beach and just thinking.

You should have been at the MSDN Roadshow in Edinburgh last week. I think that was set at a pace 10% above the fastest learner.

It was nice to see that some of the sessions gave examples in C++, most were in C# and I only spotted a couple of VB.NET slides

I'm with you. There's nothing a conference could tell me which I couldn't learn from a good book or my own experiments. Should I have problems understanding something in the book, I could always reread the page/section/chapter. Trying to do the same with a speaker would result in a new coat made of tar and feathers.
