I'd say it is the bean-counters in charge, not marketing. They can't wait till WinFS and everything else is ready. They need a new round of upgrades to fill the coffers.
And they are doing a terrible job of marketing right now.

... and the last time that happened, they came out with Windows Me...

You're right, of course - I hadn't thought it through. Stockbrokers call it "churning" accounts, encouraging clients to dump one issue and buy another solely for the purpose of generating commissions. In the software business this is legal. If Marketing was driving this release we'd be inundated by visions of dancing fat guys in butterfly suits touting the virtues of Longhorn with an elderly rock band for backup. Marketing is treating this as a ho-hum event so far; time for someone to buy them another round of drinks to get some enthusiasm fired up.

IMHO I think MS should WAIT until Longhorn is the full package it was supposed to be, otherwise, industry and commerce will simply use this as an excuse not to upgrade. Its all very well us developers having all these nice new toys to build apps with but unless companies have the infrastructure in place to run them we are wasting our time. Longhorn needs to be a BIG jump in technology and offer an 'overwhelming' reason for companies to move forward. I do projects for mega-large companies who still use Windows 95 and 98!!!!! The incentive is just not there to upgrade!

disagree.
if it's too different to the point of incompatibility, you won't have the opportunity to play wit the new toys for reason of compatibility.
I praise MS decision to have scaled down version for XP!

You gotta be kidding! I remember well "stability" of Win95/Win98... I only hope these companies are not involved in medical care, plane navigation or something like that...

Well some of the more recent ones include banking, insurance, retail, and the oil industry! Some of these companies are so backwards in IT its just incredible! Who would imagine an oil major still running Windows 98, or a banking system still running on Windows 95! Well its true! And there are countless other companies out there doing the same.
The biggest problem I have is convincing companies to upgrade their infrastructure, operating systems, databases and apps etc so they can take advantage of new technologies to give them a competive advantage, but the interia is just overwhelming! They still view IT as a cost instead of an asset. Too many companies are still run and controlled by accountants!

The only significant benefit I can see in Longhorn is a more efficient storage model. Indigo is a useful enhancement, and Avalon is a nice-to-have, but without WinFS there's no reason to switch.
Yep. Although I look at it slightly differently: with no stored data, there is nothing to present or communicate.
I would be interested to see what comes of SCC/RCS applications integrated with and/or running on top of WinFS. Shadowing in concert with it all would be interesting as well... At least, I think so... YMMV...
Peace!

Which is odd when you consider Avalon is leading on CP which is a site for, well, techies. Right?

Yeah, but even we get turned on by nice visuals - otherwise we'd have all moved to Linux a long time ago.

I would have agreed with you until a few weeks ago when Lauren sent me a screenshot of her Linux setup. Wowzer, the skin was better than anything I have seen on Windows XP or Mac OS. They have done some serious work making Linux desktops look purty.

Linux is 100% better looking than windows...
Here try out some *FREE* distro's:
SUSE 9.1 : www.suse.com
Fedora Core 2: www.redhat.com
....
....
....
....
Try it out, play with the windows Widgets and GDesklets. You may never go back to your windows desktop...
