I was vote number 100 for the MySQL.
I want to learn SQL Server eventually, but I had to start somewhere and free was a good nudge in MySQL's direction.

I don't think you can use the term "free" for any "express" product from Microsoft. Free as in beer, maybe, in some way. But the license is rather restricted and targets mainly new comers.
Postgresql, sqlite are free, by all means. You can do whatever you like with them. Mysql is free too but the GPL may be an obstacle if you have to release your code with it (aka not a web application). But a separate license is possible.

I had an argument with a client back in 2002 when I ran into problems writing his software and I blamed him for bad communication and he said that people like me did nothing more than adding inventory records and that we were database programmers and could not write real software.
And that was when I was just starting off with real-world programming.
I left my previous day-job because I was asked to program in .NET. If I were still working for them I would probably be making web pages right now. 
And by the way, I still do work for the same client I had in 2002 and I still do not write database software.

Its funny i was under the impression i was doing real programming... but i contact a database occasionally, so guess i'm just an inferrior programmer.

ok...
what do you write software for? if you do not need a DB, fiar play. I use a database only when i need to, as it manages my data, no need to rewrite the wheel 
as the saying goes... When your only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail
also with n-teir design, it does not matter what the UI is the logic and work flow should be similar, if not the same (you may have guessed i do write some web applications)

The question being asked here, 'big iron' or 'free stuff' cannot be discerned by the choices. If I were to answer SQL Server 2005 how do you know which version I am using (Express vs. Enterprise/Professional/etc.)?
The same for Oracle. I happen to be using Oracle Express for now but the context of the answer does not agree with the choices to select from.

Based on the text answers, I would say PostgreSQL is better represented here than even SQL Server 2008... It should have been on the list.

Agreed. I never remember if it is postgresql, postgresSQL or if I can just drop the SQL part completely. Good thing is my gentoo package manager has completion so typing postgre and then getting it to complete is enough.

I use SQL2005, MySql and SQLite, but forgot to check SQLite and would like to bump it up to 1%
Seriously, are SQLite and MSDE even in the same category? I use SQLite when I want an embedded database without all the fluff and installation hassles. It's like the old ISAM.

I'm currently using 2005. I might move to SQL 2008 if we got the stable version. But I heard that the release date of SQL2008 will be delayed. And I'm not so sure whether we will get SQL 2008 express version or not.

How about also having a CListCtrl as one of the options, at least as an 'Optional Text Answer'.

Perhaps the next best thing?
Using LINQ, I used to ListBox controls as tables.
CListCtrl should work just fine.

This should have been a multiple choice survey. Most of us, would be using multiple databases, particularly when in product development.
Typically, at least SQL Server 2005, Oracle, Access (for limited editions), MySQL is common flavors for most products.

I agree, i use SQL 05 for all platform development and MySQL for most web development, not to mention using SQL Mobile for all Mobile/PDA Development.
Access i could say i have used for single person apps, but thats about it.

Completely true. I use 2005 for all systems being built now, probably 2008 when it comes out, SqlExpress for practically every PoC that needs a DB, MySQL for anything *nix based and Java/Python too. I want to go back to FireBird. That is one blazingly fast DB. I'd suggest it to anyone that wants to try an open source alternative.
