I think pre-order refers to ordering a product before it is launched in the market and generally available. More like reserving it.

There was a lengthy discussion about it on here some time ago when someone else objected to the term, but I can't find it at the moment.

Pre-order is when you order it before it's actually available for shipping. Most of the times you save some money, as pre-order price is lower than normal.
This approach used to increase sell...

It annoys DD[^]
It is a marketing construct used to either drive up sales as you can market something that doesn't yet exist and let people place an order, if they cannot do that then the marketing is less effective. It is also used to get an idea for the size of initial runs of a product and to more accurately distribute stock when something first goes on sale.

It looks like DD assumed that pre-order refers to before the order. It doesn't. It's short for pre-release order.

It's where you are ordering something, but before that. Hope this helps.

Pre-order on Wikipedia[^].
Unfortunately I've made a few pre-orders that were not delivered on time and I had to cancel my pre-orders long after the product was released just to 'regular order' it and get it faster
In this case (I assume your question comes from my pre-order thread below) I pre-ordered for the discount and goodies though

One example for pre-order. Books/Comics/Games/Music from Kickstarter/Indiegogo campaigns. Creators raise money to make something & backers get those(before the general public) by choosing perks.
Another example. I have seen banners on Amazon site about some author's new book(Pre-Order) even before publish stage.

"Pre-ordering" is ordering something without any guarantee that it will ever be actually produced.
"Ordering" is waiting until you're almost sure it's actually available.

Pre-ordering is to ensure you get the poorly-finished buggy version in a brown paper bag.
You'll never get very far if all you do is follow instructions.

Is it just me? Every time I see win 8.1 my brain registers it as Win 3.1 !

Well at least with 3.1 you knew what was going to break...

Anyone is using it?
I've been using it since windows XP without issues, but now it seems impossible to get it to connect between two computers...
Anyone here is using it in Windows 8.1?
Any special trick to get it working?
Win 8.1 + AVAST antivirus here, it looks like the firewall is well configured to get it working but...
Thank you all in advance!

Do you have the latest? 2.1.2.1212?

Latest installed... it should work as always...but it doesn't want to...
I've been able to see:
1. If I try to connect from my latptop to my desktop it works until I change the display positions (my laptop is at left and my desktop at right).
2. If I try to connect from my desktop to my latop it doesn't works.
3. usually it times out.
4. I've ensured that firewall is not the issue adding manually the executables there and disabling it.
I've ended up installing synergy, but it is much less powerful... by now it is slower and it can't share the clipboard...
I hope I'll be able to find out a solution...
Thank you for your post.

I've been using it for a long time without issues, even under Windows 8.x but ever since I installed that 'Windows 8.1 Update' that they forced us to install or we'd stop receiving patches, it has been buggy. Sometimes it doesn't load on the other computer until you log in, etc.
One thing I found since installing Visual Studio 2013, instead of communicating through my Network Interface Card, Mouse Without Borders was trying to communicate through a "Hyper-V Virtual Network Adapter"...you should verify what NIC it is trying to communicate through...if it's Hyper-V, then change it back to your physical NIC.
I made the mistake of adding development for Windows Phone when I installed VS2013.

5. It is using the right NIC. (This also happens if you install VMware or other virtual machine systems).

One last thing you can try when you have a chance is using IP addresses on the 'IP Mappings' tab instead of Computer Names?
|
|
|
|
|
I've done it this way:
desktop_name xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
laptop_name yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy
and exactly the same result...

You've probably done this already but maybe un-install and re-install to re-enable the firewall exceptions and such?
There is a Mouse Without Borders support forum...the guy that wrote it hangs out there...I've dealt with him, he's quite helpful...
