It's been officially out for weeks now, but looks like 920 users on AT&T will have a longer wait. Just wondering if anyone else here has the same model and did get an update?

IIRC the 520 I bought to fiddle with is locked to ATT-prepaid and it's been running 8.1 for a few months now.

strangely I was talking to an Italian neighbour she was of the opinion that the entire political system in Italy was going to fall apart if he was persuaded to name names...(made the House of Commons seem the most upstanding & honest in Europe????)

Traffic lights with time-indicators already exist, but they look less cool. I've seen two variants, one with a ring of white LEDs that light up one by one, and one with a digital LED clock that counts down the number of seconds until the light changes.

I've seen some in China rather similar to the one in the pic. They have a light like a vertical bar graph that reduces in height as the change time approaches.

Not hourglasses, but in Hungariaorszag they've had countdowns on traffic lights for quite some time. The first ones I can think of where in Veszprém and have been their maybe 6 or 7 years.

I think it's the difference between 'you have an unknown amount of time' and 'you have this amount of time' to get through the light.
when the amount is unknown (and variable) I would think it more likely that drivers would err on the side of caution and slow down.
perhaps 'm wrong, but I feel that given a countdown to Red, people may think they have time and 'go for it'
(By 'people' I mean all the otehr drivers, obviously, not me - I am the perfect driver!)

Agreed.
Around Chicago (and probably many cities) they have countdown timers on some of the pedestrian walk / don't walk signals. Invariably approaching pedestrians start to trot (or run) when it gets close and end up causing more problems than not.

I believe the answer is to combine countdown traffic lights with severe sentencing for going through a red light. i.e. no fines, but jail terms, or death by suffocation.
With a countdown timer there'd be no excuse.

In my experience, pedestrians treat traffic lights as a useful tool to 0) press a button to stop cars, and 1) get an indication that it's definitely safe. Red just means "look both ways before crossing".
