Hi there,
I'm thinking about making my own type of Siri-like app but supplying a different voice.
Even if it's not as comprehensive as Siri, I'm thinking about it as an interesting side project.
Is there anything out there like dev libraries or products anyone would suggest to help with the development?
Thanks,
John

Hi,
I want to develop mobile web pages that can run on any mobile/smartphone. How can I do that using Visual Studio 2008?
PS: I will also need to link it to a DB since it'll be a mobile shopping website.

I already posted a suggestion here[^], a little more research should lead you to the peculiarities of mobile enabled web pages.

How about using the java.util.zip Deflate[^] class to compress and System.IO.Compression GZipStream[^] to decompress?

Doesn`t work,,, Do you test your solution?

the android compression code would compress for the gzip format. I searched for a gzip api for C# and found the one I linked to. What exactly is the problem with it? I'm not a C# programmer, apologies if I lead you astray.

Hi,
I'm actually a beginner in mobile dev and I just want to ask you guys of what are the tools needed (UI design, code-behind and DBMS) to develop platform-independent apps that can run on any smartphone (e.g. Nokia)?
Regards,
|
|
|
|
|
I think it's a little harder to have platform-independence in the mobile world than it is in the desktop world (although it hardly ever works completely right on desktops either). Apple products use objective-C applications while Android apps are made with Java, and the apps won't run in both types of devices. Not sure what OS Nokia uses but on top of Apple and Android, there's also the Win7 mobile (which probably supports other frameworks, may support Java stuff too though), then there's the BlackBerry OS and any other manufacturer operating systems that are out there.
...As you can see, no real platform independence when it comes to mobile apps. You're going to have to pick one and figure out what you need in order to develop for that specific device. Sorry

The problem with a platform independent solution, if one even exists is that each platform has it's own user experience so I don't think it would work particularly well.
A lot of developers serve up webpages so the app itself is just basically a skin. Problem here of cause is the user needs access to the internet.

I am starting to look at mobile development myself having worked on some C# projects in the past four years.
I have chosen Android as the platform to learn.
I have never written Java before but looking at it yesterday it has enough similarities with C#(C# is the progeny of Java) for it to be fairly straightforward with regards to the basics.
So if you want to develop in Android here is the order of installation, it being fresh in my history, I have provided you with the URLs.
Download and install the Android SDK clickety[^]
Download and install the Java JDK clickety[^]
Download and install the Eclipse IDE UK mirror clickety[^] - you may need to navigate up a level or two to find a mirror site closer to you...
Start with the Android Hello World tutorial and take it from there clickety[^]
Depending on how you are doing after all of this here is a really helpful SQLite tutorial clickety.[^]

I am new to Windows Phone. We have some legacy WinForm applications for Windows CE 4.0. Does Windows Phone 7.x support WinForm development?
It appears to me that most tutorials are using WPF ot Silverlight, which makes me think that WinForm does not exist on Windows Phone any more. Is it still possible to port legacy WinForm apps to Windows Phone?
Best,
Jun
