Ah, but can you do that? Can you separate the individual from the record of his life, from his actions and reactions? The works of a man live on beyond his departure from this world - be they good, evil, or insignificant - but only as long as there is a record of them. When the last extant copy of the last extant volume of a book is destroyed, did the author truly write it? Or are we merely relying on hearsay and conjecture? How can we be certain that (for example) Martin Luther existed without the records saying he "he did this, he did that"? Or Columbus? Or indeed Mohammed, or Jesus, or the Buddha? Or you, or I?
