Which is a problem if you are on the no fly list and therefore need the passport (assuming you aren't near Bangkok already).

Reports I saw indicated that Malaysian airport security didn't bother to do the bare minimum needed to verify if the passports were valid, because if that had they'd've found out they were stolen. In between molesting children and the elderly the theatrical security agency also does the things that would be all that a non-elephanted security service would do.
What I'm curious about is if the failing was institutional (there was no verify policy in place), due to incompetence/indifference (the checkers couldn't be bothered to do their job), or due to corruption (bribed to look the other way).

This was not in the United States or one of its dependents or territories, nor was the plane headed to the US or one of its dependents or territories. The TSA is entirely irrelevant to what happened.

Gregory is spot on. If you want to assign blame, assign it correctly. In this case the Malaysian systems are suspect. It has nothing to do with whatever security might be in place in the USA.

The numerous problems with airport security in the USA have been demonstrated elsewhere.
I wouldn't use a Malaysian airport security problem to denigrate the TSA as it isn't necessary.
Instead, I'm pointing to a larger issue wherein this latest tragedy is yet more evidence of a systemic world-wide problem - and I'm not talking about terrorism, but rather, the government's tendency to put on a nice show that inconveniences people but that accomplishes nothing.
Granted, it would have been clearer had I said, "Like the TSA, the Malaysian airport security people have demonstrated that security is little more than a dog and pony show that has little to nothing to do with protecting people and more to do with making people feel good right before they die."
I'll attempt to be more clear in the future.

Auntie interviewed a geezer this morning who was talking about his time as head of the UK Borders Agency. He said about 50,000 people slip through the net each year using such passports but compared to the 50,000,000 (I think he said) that's about 1/1000 who sneak in. That means there are lots of Manchester United supporters on the loose. No bloody wonder they need passports and non-refundable deposits to visit London. It takes a lot of money to hunt them down, clean up after them, and send them back home.

If I were ever to ex-patriot to England I'd probably become interested in sports. I couldn't care a wit for sports in the USA but the sheer thuggary of English sports (and Europe in general) is awesome. The closest thing we have to it in the states is NASCAR - the only sport where we get to watch people die.

Have you seen them? They walk around in red shirts which is useful as it helps the cleanup crews identify where they are in the crowd. It also helps the seagulls to home in on dropped food, like a fighter jet following the beacons when landing on an aircraft carrier. I know it sounds very stereotyped but ask anyone living in the sarf. We only know how to tell the truth.
Mind you, the photo in my passport looks like Martin Bayfield's mugwatch board on Crimestoppers.

As I recall, passports are not checked by the TSA (or whatever passes for "security" in Malaysia or overseas) but rather by the airline personnel (the gate agent). Once you have a boarding pass, then the security checkpoint personnel only checks to see if your identification (i.e., passport, drivers license, etc) matches your boarding pass and your face.
