Recently I posted about getting a new computer (i7 with 8Gb Ram) and still having trouble starting the Android Emulator.
It was stuck on the Android splash screen. Could not figure it out. It was driving me crazy. Then I ran some command-line stuff
c:\>adb shell ps
(adb.exe found in ADT \platform-tools)
Stuck Writing To Emulator's OS Image
I found out that even though the thing was stuck it was actually running a ton of processes.
Then I noticed that there were a bunch of installations the android image was trying to do but were failing, but it kept trying (for hours).
Finally, I stumbled upon a couple of solutions:
1. add the android home path which points to the location of the android images to environment variables (see below).
2. (most important) make sure that the path to your android images is FULL READ/WRITE access. Those files had read-only access before.
The OS is really just a file on your computer (obvious to many) and if your computer cannot write to that file then the emulator cannot either and it tries and fails forever.
This fixed it. Now emulator starts in seconds.

Have you tried the Genymotion[^] emu? It's insanely fast. And free for personal use.

I was going to try it... Well, I actually did try it on my older laptop (Celeron) and it didn't work over there either.
The only problem I had with Genymotion is that I had to install VirtualBox and I just didn't feel like installing that on my new laptop unless I absolutely have to.
However, a lot of people have told me to use it too, so it must be great.

FWIW, the Genymotion install is a self-contained installer that installs all its pre-requisites.
The standard emulators worked for me, but took forever to spin up on my Xeon quad core, 16G RAM, SSD box, which led me to Genymotion.

Yes, celeron was definitely the problem with running VirtualBox and also the problem with running the emulator at a realistic speed.
My new i7, with 8Gb RAM -- and I keep saying that in an attempt to generate envy across the Internet  -- absolutely crushes the emulator. By that, I mean I can start it in seconds and deploying running a new version of the app is like I always expected it to be.

I have installed and re-installed Android Studio, and eclipse ADT a few times, and never come across this issue. The emulators always start first time, the defaults and my custome types.

I know. I thought it was odd too, because I tried this on at least three different computers, + a virtual machine.
1. celeron laptop -- fail
2. work computer with i5 -- fail
3. work computer running a VM -- fail
4. my new i7 laptop -- fail, then success
All I do is download the latest ADK -- eclipse version.
Unzip to a directory -- but not my users\ dir. Could be the issue, because i know stuff gets written to your %appdata%\ path and I actually set mine up differently. i like to control where stuff on my computer gets located.
I think this is the difference that fouls it up, but it shouldn't.

I unzip it to C:\Program Files, and it works fine. It does create a couple of hidden files in C:\Users\<usename>, that may be worth checking out.

Emulators suck 
I code for both Android, IOS and Windows Phone and have stopped using the emulators. I have a cpuple of different devices for each platform and is doing all my testing and debugging on those. (and when you start using things like google play and cameras and stuff, you need to test on hardware anyway as it's not supported by the emulators)

You are right. I feel the same way about it. It's just that I'm starting out and I travel a lot and developing software in coffee shops so I am attempting to carry as little as possible with me. So far for my limited apps I am okay and learning, but I appreciate your input so that when I get there I will understand there is a lot that just isn't possible with emulators. Thanks for the input.

In past when I looked for job I send my resume to numerous companies with hope to some answers (1 out of 200 answers in average).
But today I got an email from a company that asks me if I interested in a team leader position...
The most amusing of all this that I do not know how they got my resume...or maybe they visited CP?

The recruiters all talk to each other and pass around contacts and potentials. Also people know people who know people etc. and things move around that way.
