The whole Apple/Mac/iTurd environment just irks me too deeply to join.
Partly - I don't like to give up so much control (else I could surrender to Win10)Partly - I'm just too cheap to overpay for their products and accessories.Linux ecosystem is just the opposite - generally, the entire O/S is open-source. That's an awful lot of control given back to the user if they want it.

Actually, Apple doesn't force updates, so you really do have more control than with Win10.

Obviously your choice... but I can say this unequivocally: The Apple hardware I've owned is of MUCH higher quality than any PC I've owned. It is more reliable and has lasted longer. I'm willing to pay a small premium for high quality that lasts years longer. After all, you usually get what you pay for.

I know, I used it exclusively for a couple years. Overall, I found the quality of the software lacking. The OS itself is stable and secure but as a desktop / laptop user I'm looking for quality apps with intuitive interfaces. Free and open source doesn't get my work done. Again, you usually get what you pay for.

I've had my PC's last until I just stripped them for the few parts that hadn't gotten so obsolete they were useless (like the floppy drives, 8-bit VGA card, RAM). Maybe it's because I buy bare-bones systems. How does that sort of thing work out for Apple - you know, buying what you want and not what you don't want - when purchasing a system? My systems are all new, now, but that's because salt water from hurricane Sandy shortened the life (killed) on everything it touched.
As for open source and free? Lacking quality?
Well, I've used Gimp 2 for years. Audacity, too. VLC and Screenhunter, and quite a few others. Easy to use and totally dependable. For the first two, easy to use at a basic level and capable of advancing as far as I'll ever need to go.
And - with a real genuine mass of "open source" parts selection as well as software don't worry about voiding my warranty because I didn't overpay for something with their logo on it.

Err... exactly the same way as when you purchase a Dell or HP or Acer or Lenovo or... They each offer various choices over a range of models with specific options for CPU, RAM, etc... just like Apple.
True, you can't really build your own Apple Mac by buying components (yes, you could build a Hackintosh but that's not what we're talking about) but that's a (shrinking?) niche market even with PC's.

IMHO (with only a handful of exceptions) Linux applications are inconsistent and of lower than average quality. At the time I used it full time (2007 - 2008) the total lack of a decent 2D CAD application was crippling, office software was lame, graphics and printer drivers were painful.
I've kept a Linux PC around ever since but the hardware is getting quite old so judging it wouldn't be fair.

On Monday my Mac Mini arrived. It is 2.6Ghz i5, 8GB one, running El Capitan.
I've never used a Mac before, but I am now going to develop some iOS apps so I was _compelled_ to get one.
The Really Good
The user experience of setting it up was fantastic and amazing!
I hooked it up to my HDTv as a monitor, connected an old usb keyboard and an old usb mouse and started it up.
The set up was fantastic, smooth, beautiful.
Remote Desktop (via VNC)
Next I googled how to be able to connect to the device remotely (from my Win10 PC, of course). 
So easy. The thing sits on my desktop and I VNC to it. Nothing connected to the little device at all.
Speed?
The only thing I thought is that it would be a bit faster.
I just thought it might be a bit faster building apps etc. It feels a bit slow in XCode.
Is an 2.6Ghz, 8GB i5 just not enough for simple Swift dev in XCode?
I have nothing to compare it to, but it _feels_ slow.
Why are all the minimize, maximize, close buttons on the left side of each window?

Good question. I have. It's XCode compiling and running. It's the iPhone emulator and all those pieces.
It seemed a bit better last night on code, build, run loops but I just thought it might be faster.
Probably just the nature of dev.

Funny you'd describe that particular experience.
I bought a refurbished Dell for $120 (included supplemental video card) with Win7 Professional on it.
IJW: Plugged it right into my TV via HDMI port - it worked immediately. No setup at all.
It also connected to my router as soon as I picked my SID.
It's fast enough to use as a video player (just a duel core) - why I got it. Also, when I work from home I can sit on a bean-bag and code (wireless mouse/keyboard @$15 on sale at Staples).
Added the software I need for home, VMWare client to connect to work.
Lots of USB ports and stuff - I can use all of my existing external devices! Even the two NAS units.
I must concede, however, that it will NOT develop and iOS apps. I won't let it.

My laptop already has Linux on it (of the Mint variety), and has had it for the past 6 or so months. My desktop is still Win 8.1 because I've got a gaming habit that needs fed regularly, and not enough of my preferred titles are Linux ready yet.
Once my job started focusing more on Java, Javascript, and Salesforce, I was no longer tied to a windows development platform, so that's why my laptop was switched, and I've got no issues.

Quite some years ago, when Linux first seemed to be breaking out into the mainstream, there was a TV interview and the interviewer asked which O/S the consumers will choose.
He gave a very decent answer: to the consumer, it really doesn't matter. If they can go to their screen, click their icons, and it opens their applications then what's the difference to them? That's really the nutshell answer.
There's both Linux and Mac's O/S. Which do you think has the most visibility in the consumer consciousness (ironically, Mac's pretty much are Linux). Going the other way, however, we do have consumer acceptance of other O/S's (e.g., Android) rather quickly.
If you PC's basically a toy (vs. a tool), then Android and Mac would seem to have the edge with the typical consumer. If you're a developer - well, which one lets you emulate the other two (should you have the notion?)?

You have a point there; every time I tell the truth I break-out in the most itchy denial, but it's so satisfying to keep scratching it, even if I end up virtually covered in outrageous lies.

I'll probably do the same.
I have updated to 10 short before end of free promotion, tested it for 2 weeks and jumped back to Win7.
When Win7 ends... I will give a 2nd chance to Win10, if still same politics, I will try Linux.
But I fear that if my wife doesn't get used to Linux...

If you set up her system, what is there to get used to?
Icons: click and application opens.
There will be new software in some cases (and new icons) - depending upon what you use now.
Libre should get her through most of her day. Gimp 2 for her photos. It's all out there. Give her Ubuntu and it has easy updating and location/installation of applications (for you, and eventually for her).
But mainly - point-and-click is still point-and-click.
