I'm in New Zealand again. I've been here since last Thursday. I purchased a prepaid sim card from the major network (starting with V) which gave me phone calls and 100mb. It was working well last week but this morning when I tried to use the internet I found no service present. I rang the service line and was told there had been a "system downgrade" which is obviously the euphemism used here for crash and unfortunately I no longer had internet. This had been masked for a couple of days because I had been using the wifi provided at our accommodation. Obviously I suggested they reverse the system downgrade. Its been a long weekend and the lady suggested I call the technical support tomorrow. Let's see how that pans out.

good on the kiwi's to be big enough to admit it, the Aussie system is even older (and yes: hence worse) but the people there still believe their telco is world class and 56k is 'maxed out light speed.'

Which question? I wanted to know what happened to my internet access and whether it would come back. In general internet speeds in NZ are excellent.
As for Australia there is no point comparing a country with 25mill people in 7.5mill sq km with another having 5mill in 700 sq km.

Why O why am I forced to accept more and more crap from MICROSOFT! Since updating to win 10, I lost the handy Paint program in which you could paste and edit screen shots, into something that claims to be 3D! Far more complex altogether! I never wanted that crap from them.
I was perfectly happy with the XP interface. Why did this need to change! Win 10 makes an effort, which is as much about loosing face, as about anything else!
I manage a suite of software which has had extremely few user interface changes in the last 15 years. Every User Interface change has a follow on effect of changing of training manuals, up to the setting up of training sessions. It is something we cannot justify to our clients.
Our software does not connect to the internet, and runs happily under WIN 98 or Win XP, without any Service Packs.
Now I understand that 'Under the Hood' changes were needed, to deal with all sorts of new security threats. What I do not understand is, why this needed a new User Interface.
Now as the Mobile Phone effort is being burried, can we please get rid of all those compulsary and hatefull Apps in Win10. Horses for Courses!

In Win10 there is an app called "Snipping Tool" built in that does screenshots better than paint does/did.

Bloody hell Bram if MS just changed the things that needed to be done (they have not managed to achieve this feat EVER) how are they supposed to justify releasing and charging for a new version every year or so.
Your problem is that you have not trained your users to expect a regular upgrade with new features and don't give me any crap about if it ain't broke, MS are experts at breaking existing systems.

How much training have you had to understand the UI of MS-Paint? A textbox behaves exactly as expected, regardless of your application - it should not even need a manual nor a training session.

With those OSes it would be very unwise to connect to the internet.

Today, I will be tasked with the burden of reinstalling Windows on one of my home PCs. I refuse to got o Win10, and will be reinstalling Win7. Mostly because it's a known environment in which all of my software functions reasonably well. I have absolutely no compelling reason to "upgrade" to Win10.
