It seems to be a security pattern that a few software providers have followed.

Teamviewer has something similar where if the client you are trying to log into is not responding and you try logging in more than x(nobody tells you what x is) number of times you get a message telling you that there have been multiple failed logged attempts and you need to wait for a while before trying to log in again(yet again there is no hint as to how long you have to wait before trying again.)

What really rankles about Teamviewer is that even if you have the correct credentials, if the login attempt fails because of some unknown reason - that still counts towards your incorrect login attempt count.
