There is an OfficeMax 1/4 mile east of the Dillon / Silverthorne exit. They have SD cards. 
It's so awesome that we came here on vacation and immediately sent for our stuff and stayed. It's called "Colorado's Playground" and it is. But most of us live pretty close to the edge as there isn't much opportunity or your talents to be to your advantage like in the cities.

Tomorrow morning I got my exit talk with my current employer, so I'll be "officially" out of a job after that.
They're going to wipe my laptop too, so I'm backing up all my stuff (which should've been backed up already, I know) so they can wipe it clean and I can put all my stuff back... 
A pointless exercise, really, but at least they can say "we did everything we could to prevent our data from leaking."
I'm looking forward to be done with it.
Not because they were a bad employer or it's a bad breakup, on the contrary, but just because I'll be free and ready to take on new challenges
Also, can anyone recommend something for automatic backup?
It's mostly documents, music, vacation pictures and videos, but all in all we're talking a good 300 GB here...
I've got an external HD which has most of the files (but it's not necessarily a backup disk).
If it dies I pretty much lose all of my life's work

I know this is not exactly what you ask, but, have you considered a small NAS? something that would not cost you an eye but that would do this, would give you remote access to your files, you could have GIT or any other thing you'd like installed there...
I was used to work against servers at the company before, but since I got the NAS at my new business I've been happier than a clam...
And of course I make external backups to external HDDs too, but I'm not super worried if any of those break... I have 2 RAID disks mounted in the NAS...

Two disk RAID is a pain, you lose so much space - I have four * 4TB drives in mine, so I get 11TB out of the 16 physical, together with failure detect and continue. And backups should be air gapped as ransomware will encrypt / corrupt network drives as well as local ones.
And I still take backup images, so I can restore the whole system if the disk goes / gets corrupted. Much, much quicker than reinstall and reconfigure Windows, VS, etc.

I have two 6TB wd red disks and they costed a small fortune each...
And I still have plenty of space... 2 disks mirrored and as you say the two external hard disks I use to make backups are rotated each month and while one is connected to the NAS the other one is at my parents house...
Not 100% fail safe, but I'm enough ok with it and the size works for me... By now... 
When it won't work anymore for me, I'll have to buy a new NAS and a new set of HDDs...

I really like AOMEI Backupper - Data Backup and Restore Software for PC, Laptop and Server[^] - it has a freeware version as well as apaid one, and the only thing the free version includes automation. I paid for it becase it good, and I use it regularly, so it's only fair on the developers.
Not only does it do disk images, you can mount them to recover individual files which can be very handy!

Since I saw your recommendation here, I've used it several times and apart of the GUI, which I don't like, everything works perfectly and it never failed me.

It's a work and personal laptop.
I got it from work, but I've been using it mostly for personal stuff.
My last job had a bring your own device policy though so I've used it for that too.
Usually I'd have to return the laptop, but since it's the only one I have and it's pretty good, I'm buying it from them and they want to clean it before I take it.
There's really no need as there's nothing related to them or their clients on it anymore, but it's standard procedure.
It's probably also more to make sure I don't accidentally leak data (like when I sell it or put it in the trash without formatting it first) than to prevent me from wilfully leaking data (which they really can't stop, but what I'd never do, of course).

Before investing in a backup system, I would ask myself the following questions:
- Is this stuff important?
Yes - carry on to question 2; no - stop right here - How hard would it be to replace?
Difficult/impossible - carry on to question 3; Easy/Trivial - stop right here - Is it confidential (including stuff that you don't want leaking to the public domain)?
No - set up a backup using reputable Cloud services; yes - use a local backup
For your irreplaceable, confidential stuff, I would set up a system as follows:
On the hardware side, I would set up a tiered system:
- NAS
This should be attached to your home network and behind the firewall (don't be tempted to use it for remote access!). All the important stuff should be backed up to this on a regular basis. - Local, air-gapped backup
The NAS should be backed up to this on a regular basis - Off-site, air-gapped backup
The local backup should be duplicated, and and stored off-site (e.g. your parent's house). Not only will this encourage you to visit your parents regularly, it will also provide insurance against fires, break-ins, floods, etc.
As for software, OG has recommended AOMEI Backupper. I add my recommendation.

They must be claiming that that's their unique feature, in the browser world.
Apart from hobby browsers and browsers that have seven-or-less users, I can't think of one that doesn't have Linux (and even Android, in most cases) versions.
Maybe all their guys are too busy working on the new icon (coming soon!) to do any functional coding.
