We have a Logitech universal remote - five devices, one remote. Every once in a while, one or more devices get out of sync, but it's easy to recover.

this is a hill i will die on. Smart devices should talk to smart phones, and devices these days should be smart if they cost $100 or more.

My "universal" remote talks to the "smart hub" that talks to the actual devices. There is an app that can talk to the "smart hub" if you can't find the remote (or just prefer the app).

can it page the remote? *raises eyebrow* - one of the reasons I've never bought into these things is so many lack a page feature. You'd think for what you'd spend they'd put some thought into that. That's also one of the reasons i like a phone. It makes noise. It can bark or whistle at you.

That's a side rant of mine. DLNA was released in the 1990s.
Devices are just now supporting it over the past decade. 15-20 years is just too long of a turnaround time for tech. Meh.

Not that I'm aware of. It's a non-issue for me. It's only the wife and I and we are both very good at ALWAYS keeping it in one of two or three places.

We're not married to our phones like everyone else seems to be. With one exception, I don't have any apps on mine that didn't come with it.
We've never lost a remote, and the Logitech is cheap, so buying another one won't be a problem if we need to do it.

okay that's fair but using one as a remote doesn't require it to be next to your head and you can pick them up in a happy meal these days. So even then, it makes more sense to me than an extra gadget (since most people already have them and they're easy and cheap to buy)

I'm not afraid to have a telephone at my head. Not after playing with unshielded megawatt microwave devices for a few years. It's more like I don't want to allow myself to be conditioned like a trained monbkey to respond to every beep of that thing and then affectionally have to stroke it to finally make it beep.

With opinions like that it's probably best if you stay away from smartphones. Also, if you ever feel the need to write a manifesto... it might be time to call a psychologist for a "tune up".
