One of the reasons he's able to stay in the team is that our reserve players are all pretty ordinary. Had he been in the Aussie or SA teams they'd have dropped him earlier this year or forced him into retirement.

Yeah true but again you need to give them some time and confidence to become good at international level. The more we delay the tougher it will be to get the replacement. We need to start giving chances to Rahane, Saha and Rohit in the team.

Also, the least he could do is bat down the order, maybe at #6. That will allow younger players to adjust to playing at #4/5.

That's what all his fans wanted, sadly he's letting them down.

That's not right at all. Cricketers, including great ones, are very bad at timing their retirement.
And we all know he is not the best thinker of the game, he was a complete failure as captain. And his test average has been dropping to below-great levels in the past 10 tests or so.
He is a good batsman, but don't confuse that to mean he is a very intelligent person.

.. ...this does not mean SRT is also miss timing the retirement.
and he deserves the chances to retire at high.

I never said that. You said he's a great cricketer so he knows when to retire. I pointed out that just being great does not mean he'd know when to retire.
vaibhav mahajan wrote: but 23 yrs is a lot of time.
Exactly what people are saying. He's almost 40 now and has no future left as a player. So why delay the inevitable end, that too by playing as a mere shadow of his former self.
People who encourage him to play are people who don't seem to mind how he's embarassing himself.

They missed the bronze.
Typical Indian story continues.
It has been a bad weekend for Indian sports.
I think there was some controversies regarding boxing also.

Did you read about how we've been kicked out of the Olympics?

I did.
Indian sports seems to be in bad shape.
But that could be said for the nation itself.

Our player can still play in Olympic, however without flaunting Indian flag!

A decade ago, at Eden Gardens, India proved they were ready to challenge the world in Test cricket.
They were invincible at home.
They soon got the "bad travelers" tag out of their way and started to win abroad.
They, for a brief period, where no 1 in Test cricket.
They almost made us believe in them.
Things were all great.
Then it all ended. It had to.
Losing abroad without a fight was one setback, but losing in India itself is the last straw.
During the last decade, India, Sri Lanka and Australia reigned cricket.
The decline of the three was inevitable.
England and South Africa have finally taken the top two spots.
The next few years is when India will have to build their team again.
India is not going to win much in tests the next couple of years or so.
There are a few questions that the Indian fan has to answer as well.
Will he wait for a few years?
Or will he switch over to T20 and ODIs where India will still do better than in Test Cricket.
There is hope that test cricket will survive in the world, thanks to wins by England.
However, will it survive in India?

Just to add, When India cannot play good in India... forget about overseas. I hope now everyone understands the importance of Dravid & Laxman. Just not sure if Dhoni still understands this! Just throw Dhoni out of test team.
