This question[^] in QA received what is, in my view, an aggressive and rude comment: Quote: No, you first need to start programming, at least the basics. At least the basic abstractions, methods and parameters...
The poster of the question is clearly a student. The comment makes no attempt to answer the question or ask for additional information. At best the comment is unhelpful but, at worst, its upsetting to be on the receiving end of this vitriol.
The code is clearly naïve and almost certainly has a bug in it (values 0 -9) and I think it fair game to point out a better way to code it but, unless we don't want newbs using CP (even ones that might not make it!), this type of attack will only serve to drive them away.
We all know that there are some hideous questions, far worse than this one, but we can choose not to answer or comment. My mum taught me "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

I know, which I thought was a little harsh.
The funniest thing is that the aggressive poster added a comment to one I'd added with some pointers to a possible cause of the problem:
Quote: This is VB.NET; there is no '==', there is "THEN"...
The code was clearly C or some C variant. There's something satisfying when someone is smug and patronizing and wrong!
My concern is that we become a community of elite (like Stack Overflow) and we put newbs off. Chris' guide to QA mentions being respectful and tolerant.
Clearly the question was not well worded and the C code is pretty poor with an immense and unnecessary switch. This was a college project and the C code may not have even been written by the poster (a lab partner perhaps). Although the question was poor, the switch statement is suspect and may have been the cause of the problem (values 0 - 9 instead of '0' - '9').
I hope that this poor kid managed to suss the problem out.

A sharp sudden rise in rep points for a certain individual resulting in their appearing in the QA top-in-24 list made me curious: this QA question [^] was asked Feb. 2, 2014, and has had three "solutions" posted today. One solution posted by said individual which is a copy of code (rather worthless) was also posted on another QA question today by said individual.
I suspect there is something going on here, whether a mutual-admiration society involving more than one person voting each other up, or involving one person with multiple account: I'm not sure.

I got added as a co-author on a Tip a little while back as the author and I had "conversed" about a QA solution so he co-credited me.
Which was a nice thought - but I sort of only found out by accident when somebody commented on "my" article.
Very clever spammer this one. Slapped.

I had to check and it is possible to report old #1 as a spammer. I didn't actually do it though. Maybe tomorrow
