Aw Mel that's awful.
It sounds like you're better away from that place though.

Can you believe that my last company put a clause in employment contracts which threatened disciplinary action if you revealved your salary to a co-worker? Just a means of avoiding fair pay I think.
While yes some companies do it to screw the employees many do it for two sound reasons: Jealousy and employees who think they are better than they are.
Employees don't always realise the implications of revealing their salary.

I'm a great believer in trust and openness - I truly detest secrecy (a legacy of having to hide for so long I guess).
While I do understand employers being twitchy about it, I also know that it's used too often to keep salaries for loyal staff at existing levels while pushing them markedly up for newcomers - and when that comes out it just causes dissaffection and bad feeling. Not a good thing.
I can see that greater openness (and the willingness on the part of employers to adjust pay scales in response to external conditions where warranted) could have a positive effect on staff retention and productivity - but it takes a brave employer to take that step...and of course employees must remember they have a responsibility to the company too.

While I personally have no proble with people knowing how much I make (and if you make more that I do then good for you), I have seen where this knowledge can cause serious problems for a company. I worked with a guy who believed that when layoffs came around, the first person you should lay off should be the last person hired, reguardless of the skills or lack thereof of the rest of the staff. This same person had a BIG problem with being paid less than the top developer un the company...even though he was a lot less talented.
Its people like this that create the need for secrecy and policies that forbid the disclosure of compensation information.

True - I've known people like that. It always seems that the bigger the loudmouth, the less anyone listens.
If they're that much of a pain the company should be able to deal with it. If it can't, there's a problem somewhere which sooner or later will cause disruption to the smooth running of the business.
At the end of the day, each company has to find a policy that worksfor them. Personally, I'd rather see the need for secrecy having to be justified than the need for openness.
Just my $0.03 (damn inflation)

GOOD GOD! I am proudly the most underpaid here....
$35,000 Australian. Equivalant to around
$18,000 US or
$13,000 pounds.
Thats for design, development and deployment of various applications in various languages.
That is peanuts.

This question:
What products will you be purchasing in the next 12 months (personal or business)?
has the option 'other'. Who on earth is not going to buy ANYTHING other than the items listed in the next year ? How about food, clothes, etc ?
