i am working on a virtual machine, don't doubt that. but at the moment, all of the parts code is already put into an array which is then run through the virtual machine. i don't know how to read from an outside file yet, and i thought that txt would be easiest and so i'll start with that and then move onto binary files and all that.

My friend asked me if I could teach him how to program because he wants to know, but he doesn't know where to begin. So I'm making a small interpreter that takes in code, changes it to C# code and I'm using a CSharpCodeProvider class to compile the code into a .exe file. So I've changed it a little, but I still want to make it easier for him by taking out the 'using System;' and all that...

i've tried to search for 'how to make an operating system', but mostly that comes up is stuff using COSMOS(which doesn't work on my computer), SUSE Studio or just people saying 'look at this piece of code and then do this with it an you have an operating system'. as i said, i want a detailed tutorial.

seriously? you are questioning me about making programming languages? i know about tokenisation, but i am writing this programming language a little differently because this is still a beginners class. for my scanning and tokenising is a foreach statement. so as you can see, it isn't so easy. if you really want to ask me about 'MY' programming languages, as in the ones that I write for myself, that is a different topic.

your right, i am not serious, i'm curious. i just want to know how to do this and being given a big lot of complicated code and expecting me to look through all of it isn't what i had in mind. i thought that someone would give me a small example code.

i know what you mean, but what i am asking is how to make a file type that acts like a zip file. i know that you are only trying to help, but giving me examples like that doesn't help me. i want someone to tell me where to start and give me a basic piece of source code instead of someone giving me answers saying 'why don't you look at this very advanced code and try to understand what is happening'.

yes i did, but this has not helped me at all. you don't get what i am trying to say. i don't want to make a zip file, i want to make my own file type completely that acts like a zip file. with one program, it compiles multiple files into it and with another i am able to look inside of it and access data from each individual file that has been compiled into it.

i know all the bugs and errors of my code, i have written, tested, written and tested some more. This is the best thing that i could come up with. i don't really want to use regex that much anyway. this programming language isn't meant to be a serious programming language anyway, i upload videos on youtube and make tutorials, this programming language is meant to be easy to use and understand yet effective. if i start using regex, people who are just starting to learn how to do this kind of stuff could get really confused.

well, one of the main reasons that i want to use console is the feel of it. i don't want to have fancy graphics, i just want to keep it simple. i like the feel of the ascii art console games. and another reason is because it is really easy :)

i have tokenised my programming language. i have assigned it into a list called tokens and then the parser looks at each individual tokens and does what is assigned to that token. if the token is not recognised, then an error is passed. I have done programming languages before, but i don't know how to add classes. i thought that the easiest way for me was to do something like this, it takes the code from inbetween 2 strings and put it into another string.

actually, i used it a bit more and i wanted to use it for my programming language for classes but i found that it doesn't work. I would type this in:
group (start)
print Hello World
end group
print Something
and it would print both Hello World and Something. this is my code:
Dim regex As Regex = New Regex( "(?<=group \(" & classname & "\))(?)(?=end group)", RegexOptions.Singleline Or RegexOptions.CultureInvariant)
string code = regex.match(textbox1.text).Value
for each a as string in code.split(controlchars.lf)
if a.startswith("print ")
textbox2.text &= a.substring(6)
end if
next
can you please fix up my code?

I need to have more than just one group though. am I allowed to do something like:
public static Regex regex = new Regex(
"(?<=group " & stringname & " \\(.*?\\))(?.*?)(?=end group)",
RegexOptions.Singleline
| RegexOptions.CultureInvariant
| RegexOptions.Compiled );
...
string s = regex.Match(textBox1.Text).Value;
that is what I am looking for, but I don't know if that will work.

the reason i am asking this is because i am making a virtual machine, something similar to virtual box. it opens up the asm file and runs the code it gives you. or, i would like to make an operating system in c#, and since c# and visual basic are so similar, i would ask in visual basic and be able to understand it better, then translate it into c# when i know how to do it.

this is just one of my language ideas. my friend wants to learn how to program in assembly but he can't get a grasp on it. i have taught him Visual Basic, Visual C#, C++ and even a bit of java, but he really wants to be a computer programmer when he gets older and wants to learn assembly.
i have wondered how to teach him how to program in it, i myself know how to program in it, and i thought that if i make a programming language that uses a similar syntax to it, but it is also easy to understand and program in and still easy for me to teach. this is one of the ideas that i came up with, so can you just please help me out?

i cant really post a comment on solution 1, but this isn't what i wanted for readers out there. what i actually want is that you drag and drop the text file on the module "exe" file and the module reads the file that has been droped on it.

i know what parsing technique i am going to use. i am actually making my programming language at the moment. i have 3 different classes to make my programming language with. there is the...
1. file opener, to open the file
2. tokeniser, to scan and split up the file
3. the parser, to scan the tokens and recognize some commands, then sends it off to the generator
4. to generate the code for the exe file.
i have based making this programming language on how real programming languages are made. and i am making my programming language for a challenge at school, there is the I.T. teacher at school who is teaching some year 12s how to program. he has a challenge for whoever can make a programming language the first and the best. i want to win both, and i am only in year 9!
