How do I fix this invalid option error when I publish an excel addin with visual studio 2017

When I try to publish an Excel addin using visual studio 2017 I get the following error -

An error occurred while signing: Failed to sign bin\Debug\app.publish\\setup.exe. Sign Tool Error: Invalid option /fd

How do I fix it?

What I have tried:

I did a Google search on the error. I found one reference that said to remove previous versions of Visual Studio. I did that but I still get the error.

Thanks Bryian. After noting from your link that the problem could be solved by uninstalling old versions of visual basic, I did that. However the error persisted. Then I searched for signtool on my PC and discovered that the uninstall had not removed old versions of it. They dated back as far as 2007 before the /fd option was available.
I deleted them manually, and reinstalled visual studio 2017. It works fine now.
