Global variable usage to handle Online Users

Hi In my project I am trying to handle all the online users in an Application variable(not keeping any status field in the database). Is it a good idea? Otherwise how can I show all the online users. If you can please help me.

my words,this is not good one.you cant handle while the large amount of users logged in.

Thank you for your time. Session is not encouraging my company that's why I chose the Global variable. Have you suggest any other better idea to me?

Ok thanks. can I use a static List instead of an Application variable?
