So I think I just completed about 80% of MIDI input capturing in my MIDI library - previously it had no facilities for that so I decided to add it.
Unfortunately I've found that trying to use my Axiom 61 pro MIDI keyboard/controller by patching the USB device through to the VM doesn't work. It "sees" the device but attempting to open it causes win32 to throw me an Out of Memory exception (it's *not* out of memory). It happens in my audio workstation software too (I use FL studio)
Anyway, so now I can't test this code I wrote.
Option 1: install VMWare alongside this and see if it will work but installing windows and a .NET debugger is a laborious process and I don't want to undertake unless it's a sure thing.
Option 2: reinstall my primary OS as a Windows 10 machine instead of an ubuntu linux box as there's no problems with the MIDI-over-USB on a primary OS.
It's super frustrating because now I'm blocked on that project until then, and yet it's the one I'm most motivated to work on - i'm trying to ease my way back into coding for a bit.

Sounds like a perfect excuse to write a linux USB driver!
Come on, you know that's what you want to do!!!

I'm thinking of adding linux support to the code, but there's not one universal library I can p/invoke to. And even then, I still have to test the windows code somehow.

I hate it when a mistyped address gets you someone's personal page. For example, using .com instead of .org in http://www.agilemanifesto.com/ get's you this loser's page. I looked for a way to contact him directly so I could write an incendiary email but no path was available. Please die in a fire.
James, you aren't clever, you aren't cute, you're a bad person IRL.

Haven't tried any; the "challenges" make me wary.
Ordered a shop manual for my older car online expecting to get a PDF. Instead, I get an XP virtual machine image file and instructions to install a VM Box and run the app. I was up and running in under a minute. The XP "shop manual" was actually quite brilliant.
Don't now how this compares with the state of the art but this is still pretty good.

I'd love to see the agreement that lets them distribute XP.

having them in an electronic format (DVD or an Instant Download) is a huge advantage over having a book since there is no getting oil or dirty hands on them
...and to interact with the actual content, you're still going to get "oil or dirty hands" all over your keyboard and mouse or worse, your touch device's screen. What advantage are they claiming exists exactly? Oh yeah, shifting the problem on the user. They no longer have any reason to send replacements for dirty manuals.

The PDF is usually a copy of a paper publication. What I got this time, was the equivalent of a "repair shop" database app for my 1999 model; XP era origin. They've down played the technical aspects and history.
I'd classify it as early multi-media; with graphics and primitive hyper linking (lots of cascading list boxes).

I also recently purchased a shop manual from the same site. The problem with the virtual machine approach is that I can't run it on a weak tablet in my garage.
I need to run it on a machine that has some horsepower. (pun not intended)

You could try RDP from your tablet into your main PC. (I have 100 ft cables if necessary). The flexible USB cameras work well with a weak device. The dust bunnies are "huge".
