So we are going to have a few Silent Nights because everyone is 'Away from a Manager'?
I had 'Three Quips come Sailing in' to my head for this reply so I guess I am done.
Merry Christmas everyone!

I never noticed.
I'll have to search them out, if they've been spooled.

So apparently the idea of a 'god' dying and coming back to life three days later is a common theme in religion, from Isis, to the sun at xmas, to jesus on good friday.
Anyway, just a thought.
Happy god death and rebirth festival to you all!

Funny how, of the several religions descended from Judaism, the chrisitians seem to have forgotten the part about "dead is dead".*

Yes, it is. Perhaps it is something it picked up from Roman/Greek culture.

Clearly so:
Think Hercules, for example.
Their top deity "putting it to" a mortal and out comes a super-being.
Or maybe that's just a coincidence?

Dont know, did he die and come back to life?

Better still - went to the heavens when his "mortal part" died to live with the gods.
More food for thought: The Twelve Labors of Hercules parallels the supposed miracles.
Now - fold into this all of the "pagan" customs that give christianity it's character (eggs, rabbits for fertility in the Spring, yule logs and tree lighting for winter, and of course gift giving for the festival of Janus). What you have here is an awful lot of circumstantial evidence of where and what inspired the whole thing, at least as we know it.

yeah, in fact I think the only thing left about easter and xmas these days is the old pagan aspect, the christianity has fallen away completely.

I just stick to the old Saxon/Germanic festivities. Feasting, drinking, bringing greenery into the house, giving gifts. Easy and it fits, it is our culture.
