Someone did eventually solve yesterdays by email.
Portsmouth Stoke-on-Trent Colchester Derby Sheffield (9 characters)
Clue 1. I'll admit the clue is UK-centric, but I'm sure someone should be able to deliver the answer.
Clue 2. The answer is the solution.
Clue 3. Pat would get this in a zip.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

I know it!
Was yesterdays the same but the un-pluralised version? I thought it when you posted the same clue but couldn't get it from the cities.
Nope, yesterdays word was a very different word.
The cities matter.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

will we ever get to know yesterdays answer?
Yes, but it would give away today's as the code is exactly the same.
I didn't go with today's yesterday as I thought it was blindingly obvious, which is often the way when you know the solution.
I think I may have tried to be too clever and buggered it up.
I did consider going with Salisbury East Central London Truro Saint Albans for a different eight letter word today but stopped with what I thought was the basic one.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

Yeah I don't know what that one is.

1B, 8W - so I'm guessing you do know the answer.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

Yeah told you that in the 1st post. Got it without the clues but I thought it was yesterdays answer also.

So if you know the answer, do you know the solution, and therefore yesterday's answer too?
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

No. I get Swifglles for that.

POSTCODEX?
Bad command or file name. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaay...

Erm, 8B
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

Yeah, it was Pompey that gave it to me - along with an anagram-working-out-site that takes wildcards.
So I figured I'd leave it to him!

Go on then I'll take it - seeing as you put Portsmouth in there and I'm, dying to know what yesterdays answer is.
Postcodes
Just don't be expecting anything great tomorrow.

So, if postcodes is both the answer AND the solution?
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.
ah it's the postcodes of the cities, not necessarily the first two letters. So yesterdays answer was Swiggles.

Yes - except the postcode for Swindon is SN
SN - Swindon
IG - Ilford
G - Glasgow
LE - Leicester
S - Sheffield
Or GL - Gloucester, E - East London, or L - Liverpool
I came up with Postcode quite earlier, but was worried because they were all 'obvious' postcodes and I didn't want anyone solving it by just reading the first 2 letters as you did so stuck the S on the end, but still looked simplistic written down.
Then I tried to create some more interesting ones using the more obscure postcodes that don't obviously match up to the names.
There must be loads of possibles but I was only able to come up with Sniggles and Spriggy which aren't great words, and Spectral which I very nearly went with today.
Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them.

Just a few easier ones ... eg. GURGLES ... but I think the point of the FOSW is that the answer should be at least partly self-referential. Otherwise it just comes down to a wild guessing game. Neither of yours really cuts the mustard for me, the answers having nothing to do with the 'question' and all.
