CP search is pretty much unusable.

Actually, the 'instructions' are slightly outdated. "CCC malevolent" will do an or search but results with higher relevance, such as having both terms will be listed first.
There are two ways to accomplish the search you want:
- "CCC AND malevolent" as explained by someone else
- "+CCC +malevolent" where the '+' denotes a required term. Note: '-' denotes a must not include term.
Basically, this is a Lucene Query, so the Lucene Query syntax applies. Apache Lucene - Query Parser Syntax

I would take a look at the page source and see what that click really does. I would not be surprised if it is something nefarious.
